Swaybacks one and all

Ah, the swayback! Some time ago (three years? I've lost track...) I saw a picture of a case Swayback Gent in blue bone with threaded bolsters and a bomb shield. I thought it was one of the most beautiful knives I had ever seen! I went looking at a local farm supply store that I knew carried a good selection of Case knives, but the only thing I could find was in burnt amber, so I bought it. Sometime later I was in a somewhat distant hardware store and spotted a chestnut bone CV Swayback Jack hiding up in the corner of their small Case display. Knowing how popular (and out of production) these were, I snapped it up. It wasn't too much later I that I was in a different hardware store and saw another chestnut bone CV Swayback Jack! For some silly reason I bought that one too, I really don't know why. I guess I thought someday I might sell it (just at my cost) to help out a fellow knifeknut. I brought it home, oiled and wiped it down, wrapped it up, and put it back in the box. (Strange, they gave me the wrong box; the knife is 2009 but the box is 2013.)

OK, there are a couple of hardware stores in Indiana that we pass by infrequently when traveling to Michigan to visit family. In one of them I had a nice discussion about knives with the clerk (he's a cheetah fan) and found this pocket worn old red bone Gent. Then in 2019 we went to the Smoky Mountains and stopped at a "nearby" knife store with a couple of specific knives on my shopping list, one of them being the red bone CV Gent.

So... I finally found the blue Gent. It was at the other Indiana hardware store, and they had the entire family of blue bone knives with bomb shield and threaded bolsters. But by this time I figured I had enough swaybacks to keep me happy, so I bought a teardrop instead! (But it's also a TB pattern, so it's like it's still part of the same family.)

Love the story. I think most of us have a few extras. Great photo too. Happy New Year

Nice group. Is the top one CV? Like the color & shield.

Hard to choose, but I think I like the top one the most. Although the green one is interestingly different.

Supposed to be one in mammoth ivory at some point this year. I'm eager to see that one with a Damascus blade.

Fun story and treasure hunt. I don’t think I ever saw a swayback In the hardware store cases. I actually don’t think I’ve seen many CV in the store cases. Always trusharp. The two chestnut bone jacks are outstanding. If you decide you have too many, I’ll help you out ;)

I remember reading both of your posts when you bought the first Chestnut CV Swayback and the second one. I sometimes buy duplicates if it's a knife I really like because I'd hate to lose it and not be able to find one to replace it.

Oddly enough, I've never had to use any of the "back up" knives I've purchased but it gives me peace of mind knowing that I have them.

My most recent swayback is this 4" Italian CEM "agricultural knife" with bubinga handles and carbon blade:

My first swayback ever was this Case chestnut jigged bone CV Swayback Jack (thanks, Paul):

I've acquired other swayback examples between the two posted here that I'll include in later posts.
