Swell Center Balloon Pattern

Elliott,

I am not clear what I am looking at.
Are we only talking about the shape?
The knife needs a good set of hips?

The bolsters do not need to be equal width?
The blades configuration does not matter?

Thanks

Oy, Neeman, your teachers must've had fun with you. :p

The "swell center balloon" pattern refers to the frame of the knife, not the blade selection. (You frequently see it on whittlers though.)

The "swell center" are the two protruberances mid scale. One on each side.

The "balloon" refers to the rounded and sometimes bulbous bolsters. They can be but don't have to be of equal size.

Hope this is a bit helpful.

Which one is a Camillus, Eric?
If that Kon-Kav is an 863, I heard (or read) someplace that they were contracted through Camillus. I'll try to dig it up.

Eric

Charlie, my digging has revealed nothing but a conversation you and I had on AAPK a few months back which questioned the same thing:confused::D . I guess if we keep asking each other enough times one of us will eventually have the answer!!
In the meantime , here are a couple more:

I remember, now that you mention it, Eric. One of the clues it's a Camillus, is the coping blade up next to the main. And then there's the general shape.
That stag CS up there is super-licious! Instead of putting a piece of so-so stag on the front, to fit the shield, they put a nice piece with a small flat - brilliant!
And the bolsters are nice on the bonestag; you've got some goodies there!

Here are some keepers, from my Case Whittler collecting days. Very "Balloony!:D
The bolsters are nicely bulbous, to use Elliott's word!

Have to find me a nice whittler, the Case look nice and that Rigid looks very nice
how thin are the blades ground down to? I dislike getting knives that are thick edged
just doesn't suit a pocket knife to me...

Gary, these older Case knives are slightly hollow ground. I used to carry one (not these obviously), and it worked well, sharpened easily.

Go to collectorknives.net and you can read about Rigid knives, and see some of their patterns and learn who they are, according to Mike at Collectorknives. I have a Bulldog Whittler with really cool swedges, and it is much larger than my Case 6208 whittler. However, the reason I bought the Bulldog, was because of the Case 6208 half whittler. I did not know if I would even like the pattern, but got one, and then really enjoyed just having it in my pocket. I plan on collecting many more....God willin and the creek don't rise, of course....

Nice knife Mike! And a Number 1 !!
You've been holding out on us; That's a big'un at 4 1/4".

Thanks.

I like the bigger rounded bolsters on the Queens, Canel Street and Winchester knives. I also like the older Case 83 knives with more curves. Good to see so many nice balloon knives in one thread.

Here's a 1989 Winchester 3971 pattern. It's a little longer and a tad more slender than the previous Winchester I posted which was a 1990 3902 pattern. Sweet knives.
