Swiss Army anyone ????

Been using and carrying them LOOOOOONG before anybody ever heard of Macgyver, I'll give a good edge to the Vic's over Wenger's, I have a champ that I used as an EMT ten years ago that I still carry daily. This knife has been used (and abused) and just keeps asking for more. Hands down it is the only "if you could have just one knife?" answer for me.

BR, Just rattling your chain.:)
Seriously, I have always found the steel in V-nox SAKs to be decent. Granted it's not Bg-42. Maybe you got a dud.

My small blue Victorinox SAK has been a part of everyday living for about 11 years and still going strong. Although, I did break the return spring on the scissors. I also have a Rucksack, and a Wegner that looks like a Tinker.

I love SAKs, I own mostly Victorinox and only a few from Wenger. Although I like the stronger spring on Wenger's scissors, I find I like the way Victorinox's scissors cut better...I only use them for very fine cutting and I can make precise cuts with the Vic scissors better. Everything else I also prefer Victorinox.

SAKs have been used by adventurers the world over for many chores. I only carried one Victorinox Spartan for 10 years in Taiwan's humid environment and also dirty places with little to no care. Years later in the States I cleaned out as much crud as I could, and though shows use, most of the spring and snap of the blades returned almost like new.

These days I always have at least one SAK on me, usually a Classic. But I own probably more Victorinox knives than any other company (either that or more Spydercos, haven't counted). :)

To be truthful, I like the Victorinox steel. It serves well the product it's in. The fact I sometimes use mine for things I may be hesitant to use some other blades for is testament to its reliability, esp. considering the relative low cost, you get Swiss quality that the Chinese-made knockoffs cannot even be compared to. I just don't use the knife blades on the SAKs for overly rough, abusive tasks, as I wouldn't do with any fine, thin-edged, flat-ground blades. I always carry a few knives on me anyway...but the SAKs are still used a lot.

A SAK was my first decent knife after one or two dollar Imperials, and the proverbial scout knife which has since been lost to time.My SAK is in my desk top drawer not too far away from my Victorinox multi-tool.I think everyone should have a SAK!

Black Razor,

I have two SAKs; a relatively new Tinker, and one (same features as the current Tinker) that I received as a graduation present in 1969. That one was carried through eight years in the army, to include a Nam tour. I am still amazed that I never lost it or it's companion Buck 112 in the bush...

Back on topic- the old SAK is still in great shape and in fact is in my pocket right now. I agree, the blades don't hold an edge as well (ditto for the new one) as a good production folder, but 20 or so strokes on the Sharpmaker always bring it back quite nicely. I carry this knife mainly for the tooth pick/tweezers/screw drivers/can opener/etc. functions, and to cut anything I don't want to risk the Spydie blade on...[G]

I'm carrying the old one instead of the new one because it is definitely smaller overall. These two knives were purchased 30 years apart, but have the exact same features apart from the new knife being slightly larger overall and having a key ring attachment point. Dunno what kind of steel, but it DEFINITELY is corrosion-resistant and stays reasonably sharp.

I guess the best testimonial is that, if I could only carry one of the several knives I own, this would be it. It's just a hard-to-beat handy tool. Personal protection is what God made guns for...[G]

BTW, I track with you totally on the questions you raised in your Sebenza thread. I handled one; nice knife, but certainly no better than my Spyderco C48. FWIW, you'll get the same comments you read on your thread from Emerson-philes about THEIR favorite knife. I had one of them too; again, a nice knife, but certainly not the ultimately superior folder that some of "The Usual Suspects" would have you believe it is- he said, donning his Nomex and getting ready for the flame-fest...[BFG]

I have a "Climber". . .a "Spartan". . .and a "Classic Red."

My wife has a "Spartan" in her fishing tackle box and a "Classic Red" in her purse. They are the only "real knives" (besides her kitchen blades) allowed in her immediate vacinity.

Besides. . .they perform superbly given their specific tasks ! Now, if'n u'r tryin' to wack down a large bush or tree. . .getz u'z a difernt nife !
