"swiss army knife" for one-handed person

centikel,
I am reading this post with my wife and we are discussing this challenge/request that you have posted here.

First off, we think that you are doing a great thing for your godson.

Second, we are trying to come up with a solution with what we know that is currently out there on the market but we can't seem to find the perfect item for you.

So, here's our third tought.
Maybe you will get lucky and one of our esteemed members (who is a custom knifemaker) could possibly take an interest in your quest and make you exactly what you are looking for. I know that if it were within my means, I would take on the job.

We were thinking that maybe a scissor/knife combo (one tool would open at each end) would work for your godson. Maybe it could use an extended arm (like on the CaseXX Russlock??) on each tool that would allow for one handed ambidextrous opening and combined with a linerlock setup, might be just the ticket.
Plus, an additional factor to consider with a custom would also be that these tools would be made of superior materials (better edge retention & corrosion resistance on the blade) and also there would be the choice of handle materials that could be implemented. Put all that together with that custom fit & finish, that we here all love, and I'm sure your godson would have a tool that he could keep and use for many years to come.

Good Luck with your quest. Please post back with your results as I'm sure that we would all love to hear about them.

Oh, and last but not least...............Welcome to BFC!!!!

Can't disagree with that! That one's definitely going in my file of quotes worth quoting.

This is an odd suggestion, but...have you thought about getting him a Gerber Legend multi-tool? The pliers and most of the tools would be viable, but not easy, for a one-handed person to use.

However, the reason I recommend it is that it has knife one one side and a high-quality pair of Fiskars folding scissors on the other, both of which have thumb-studs for one-handed opening. The locking mechanism is also well-suited to one-handed closing.

Even if he never used the other features of the Legend it might be worth carrying just for the one-handed knife and scissors!

I'm going to suggest all ambidextrous folders since you haven't specified which hand your godson has. The Gerber Chameleon would be a good choice IMO. I'm fairly sure it's ambidextrous, it looks more like a tool than a weapon, and you can get one at nearly any K-Mart or Wal-Mart. You can check out it's specs at www.gerberblades.com or click on the STORE link at the top of this page and go to Gerber. For a slightly higher quality ambidextrous one-hander, CRKT makes quite a few. Most of their blades are liner locks, and while they're set up for right handed use, I can open and close mine with my left hand without any problem at all, and I'm right handed. I'm sure if your godson has only his left hand that he is much more dextrous with it than I am with mine and so he would find it even easier to manipulate than I do. Good luck finding a knife for your godson, it's very thoughtful of you to think to look for a tool to make his life a lot easier.

I've got it!

Excalibur Multi-Snip by Fiskars.

Small multi-tool with a scissors being the main attraction. Also a one-hand opening knife blade, saw, pliers, screwdrivers. And a pocket clip!

Smoky Mountain is selling them for $12.99

see it here (search on "fiskars")
