Well...today I became a member of another knife group...the Swiss Army Knife owners group. I love the Swiss Tool multi tools, and especially their saws. But I have only started seriously thinking about their folding knives recently when I noticed they were making some knives that had the same saw and on which the primary blade could be opened one handed and that locked in place.

Having seen a review on the Swiss Army Soldier Knife elsewhere, and making a comment about how much I liked it, a friend sent me one for Christmas. While I have only had it for a few hours and there is still much to do with it before I know exactly how I am going to feel about it, so far my initial impressions are that I love it. I am glad to finally have a blade with a 50/50 edge that doesn't have the serrations in the way of whittling. I love the saw, it work great for cutting but also great for both making fatwood fuzz and striking the new Going Gear firesteel...which is great because I mean to team them up in a small belt pouch with a couple of other things for urban carry on walks down town and on the river walk.

This is it in the box.

It has a primary blade that is accessible one handed and partially serrated but has the serrations at the tip rather than at the handle. It also has a can opener that has a small slotted screwdriver on the tip, a bottle opener with a large slotted screwdriver on the tip, a saw, a phillips screwdriver, and a reamer. Both the primary blade and bottle opener have liner locks to keep them open

It came very sharp and did good at whittling.

The saw did great at sawing, making fuzzy fatwood saw dust, and sparking the mischmetal firesteel

Since the wife and I like to occasionally sneak down on the riverbank down town, down in the shadows off of the river walk and have a picnic with a bottle of wine, some summer sausage, and some cheese...maybe I need to keep my eye open and see if they make a French Army version in the future :D

Nice knife. I would prefer a plain edge over the serrated one though. On another note I have never understood why swiss army puts the phillips driver on the back of many of its knives, not very easy to use.

That looks really nice. I also really like the saw on SAKs. Its the primary tool that I utilize.

I really like this one but I hear they make one set up similar with a plain edge. I just happen to like 50/50 edges, especially now in this configuration. I think the philips is on the back to be used a "T" handle but I think in that configuration you could likely get a good bit more torque on it than it could handle....

One interesting thing is that the bottle opener at the butt locks into place, just a continuation of the same liner that locks the blade. I wish they would but an in-line awl in that spot (similar to the Farmer) that would lock in. That would be perfect!

I could see that being a great thing for bushcraft..even for a soldier...perfect for making small holes for an in the field improvised water filter or something. I get the feeling things are a bit different in Europe...that maybe they have a lot of slotted screws. If I were ever elected to power (not very likely lol) the first order of business would be to outlaw slotted screws!! :D

been looking at them lately too! Primarily for the saw...

Torn between the Farmer and the One-hand Trekker, essentially the same model as yours!

Great review, I sure enjoy them. I have been a long time rabid fan of the SAK

I love the saw, but I really love primary blade as well. And the fact that it is my favorite color of all is a major plus!

Very cool mistwalker.
I love to use teh back of the SAK saw blade for scraping my fire steels they really work great for that.

I don't know if they offer the Soldiers knife PE or not, I know they offer it in other colors though, and I read somewhere that "for a price" they will do custom orders.

the solders knife seems very similar to the OHT which is avail in straight edge.... I love the vic saws as well..however people ignore there blades which have many admirable attributs for a pocket knife. THey are razor sharp.. have a flat grind, and are easy to resharpen.

Oh I have no complaints at all about the blade...sharpening the first time will be interesting but yes it came VERY sharp and cuts very well. I wonder how they recommend one doing the sharpening on this. Lol, it's military there should be a boring manual on it somewhere...all I'll have to do is learn another language :o
