Swiss Army Soldier's Knife

my OHT (same but with toothpick and tweezers and smoother scales) is my EDC.

I like my dedicated folders but I really like having more tools in them and the swiss quality is great for the price.

now if you want bigger check out the Wenger Ranger series! monsters

I've used the saw a lot and it being non-locking has never been a problem.
I also hate serrations but Vic did them right on the 111 mm SAKs
functional and like you said you can sill whittle/carve/do fine work with the
PE in back.

I've had mine for 2 years now and the edge retention has been fine, if I need
to sharpen I just use my sharpmaker.

Similar to my Trekker. Great knife. Might be all the knife you ever need.

Ooops, did I say that out loud?

If it holds up as good as it looks...and yes I have finally matured enough to carry a folding knife :D , my Harsey Air Ranger has survived fine the last seven years.... it just may well be all the knife I'll ever need. BUT luckily man does not live by need alone ;)

I love my farmer, when I get another vic, I'll either get this or the rucksak. Very cool!

I love this one, I'll have to look up the Rucksack.

I wouldn't swap my Outrider for one. That's my favorite SAK bar none. That said, this looks better for squaddies - the lock, better ability for the blade to take abuse and still cut common stuff... I usually shy away from serrations but I strongly believe they help with that.

I would have had my Outrider in that color if it had been available though. I liked my Mauser Officer's knives for that.

I carry one of the SAK Trekker models. It has the blades that the Soldier knife has, though the main blade is of a different shape.
This is my 'always have with me' knife when I hike, camp or hunt.

"Does anybody know if Wenger or Victorinox make outdoor fixed blades?"

Yorkshire Boy, hola

The closest I've seen was a Swibo [Wenger] fishing knife I bought for a mate. It was very similar to the regular yellow nylon 66 Swibo kitchen knives save for that it had a descaler spine and more pronounced contouring of the handle compared to regular Swibos. I doubt it was made from anything different from a regular Swibo fillet knife. It came in a blister pack with simple sheath.

Never seen a FB sports knife from either Victorinox or Wenger. I guess that's a blessing 'cos although SAKs are great and the kitchen beaters certainly great value, at the moment I think any FB either would have would only this be on a par with -

Ugghhh!. . . gets hit with a pang of gear envy. . .:D

Lol, around here that can happen to almost anyone at almost any given time :) ...hits me often

After reading your post I did a little looking around. I saw a black one hand trekker that looks just like the soldiers knife and a camo outrider. I liked them both but I'm still very happy with mine. The only mausers I saw were black, but they looked really good too.

They make the one handed trekker with the same blades, I was just looking at it. I'd like to see them side by side to see if they are the same in every way...maybe see if they make it with blue handle scales for the wife. I personally really like the color on this one though and the trekkers I saw were solid red or solid black.

Couple of questions for you guys: Who has had their Trekker and actually used it regularly for a few years? How is it doing?

Sometime in the coming year, I need to get one of those (probably the OHT). Haven't had a SAK since I was young. I keep meaning to get one, but something else always comes up. Nice one, Mist.

Thanks Bob, I like it a lot! I have been looking at their knives since I lost my swisstool. This is the first one I've really wanted...but somehow I don't think it will be the last. There are a couple others I'm liking, and I may end up with two more of these in kits in the new year.

I'm glad you scored that, since you've been wanting one. 'Tis the season... to go out and cut stuff with it.

mistwalker, hey

After a point I think “better” fades away with these. It's just a matter of picking the closest one to what you want short of having your ideal config assembled from parts. The Outrider is so close to a direct hit for me I don't anticipate change. Conversely, a lot of people here seem to find the Farmer is the one for their niche but I couldn't skate with that. The key thing I'd take from yours would be the lock. Other SAK locks always seem to have a tiny bit of play even when operating perfectly. That niggles me. It doesn't really matter because of the way I use SAKs, but if I could have your lock mechanism on mine that niggle would disappear.

Dunno what the Mauser / SAK situation is now but green ones were ubiquitous in surplus stores for about £5. Strangely enough given I said I preferred the green, I've done new scales for a bunch of those.

I could see that being a great thing for bushcraft..even for a soldier...perfect for making small holes for an in the field improvised water filter or something. I get the feeling things are a bit different in Europe...that maybe they have a lot of slotted screws. If I were ever elected to power (not very likely lol) the first order of business would be to outlaw slotted screws!! :D

you bet with slotted screws, Mr Robertson was Canadian btw! Traveled australia with almost the same model with scissors and a small blade.

I think I meant OHT, new Soldier, OH Sentinel....i swim with these knives on me...methinks i would look kinda funny with Busse FBM in the pool...
