Swiss Army Spyderco?

I know, people are always posting their ideas for new Spyderco models and sometimes they just make you want to roll your eyes  but sometimes they're really cool. I'm curious to see how many of each type of reaction this gets.

I was thinking about going out this weekend and buying a Victorinox Trekker with the one hand opening blade, then the Mule Team knives went up for sale and I had to get one of those (I HAD to I tell ya!) since the Trekkers will still be there in a few weeks but I have a feeling the Mules won't last long.

So, anyhow, after placing my order I was still thinking about the Trekker and I wondered if there would be any interest in a Swiss Army type knife made by
Spyderco.

It would have a one hand opening and locking main blade of course, but what other tools would people be interested in having? I'd want to keep it thin enough to be comfortable clipped inside a pocket so I wouldn't want to try to put too much in it. The Trekker has a large blade, saw, can opener/small screwdriver, bottle opener/large screwdriver, awl, and philips screwdriver. Oh, and of course the tweezers and tooth pick. This is pretty close to exactly what I would want, but 1, it would probably be a bit too thick to be comfortable clipped in the pocket and 2, it may not have very wide appeal.

So, to keep it a bit simpler and slimmer and (hopefully) more appealing to a wider range of people, I think in addition to the main blade maybe just a can opener/small screw driver and a bottle opener/large screwdriver and scissors on the other side.

Whadaya think? Cool idea or lots of rolling eyes? or ?

The subject has been brought up and discussed before. IIRC Sal basically said that Spyderco had no interest in competing with Victorinox/Wenger in the SAK type knife arena.

My apologies to Sal if I didn't capture the wording correctly - but I think I got the bottom line right.

Aw, rats! :o Oh well, maybe my next idea will be a better one.

What I think would be awsome would be a glock armorers tool endura wave, but instead of a punch pin, a standard folding screwdriver that works for philips and flathead screws. It would be in the same standard Endura envelope, but now it can also open beers and unsrew things. If they could make it durable enough, I think that would be just about the ultimate practical EDC.

Hi Salamander,

It's not a bad idea. It's been discussed and some time in the future, that maybe something to look at more closely.

The "Swiss Army Knife", as made would be very difficult to compete with. The blades are fairly soft, fine blanked and tumble finish. They have the least expensive ways of manufacturing down pat. Little of no hand work.

To make one that would be up to our standards, harder more durable blade steels, satin finish, screw in clips, etc. would end up being much more expensive. I question whether there is a market for a better made piece. If there was, don't you think Swiss Army (Victorinox or Wegner) would be making one?

I would love to see what you could come up with Sal. In the past year my EDC multitool has been going forth between full size and keychain SAKs and various small Leatherman knives. None of them have been "it" for me. Something the size / weight of the LM Squirt with scissors, a better bottle opener and a better knife blade is what I'm looking for. Tool selection aside, there are many refinements to be made to the pocket-sized multitool; better ergos, better blade steel, better corrosion resistance (In the case of LM), easy tool access etc.

Hey Sal, thanks for the reply. I love it that you take the time to respond to our wacky ideas all the time. I'm glad to hear there's at least a small possibility of something like this in the future.

Hello Sal,

I have two SAK's, one in the med kit when hiking/climbing etc. and one at home as a tool. I mostly use the screwdrivers, the spike (or whatever it's called) and sometimes the file and the saw, so I don't have to search arround for those things in my toolbox. I seldom see the blade.

Allthough a useful tool the SAK is NOT a knife I would carry, because as an EDC I want a "real" blade, a reliable lock and an ergonomic handle with sufficient finger protection. Also in a SAK, the double function of a knife as tool and weapon is compromised due to it's design.

So, if Spyderco would succeed in making an ergonomic "real knife" with some tools, I think YES, there is a market for it. :)
Of course I'm not talking about a McGyver tool here, rather something like an Endura with two slim tools integrated in the handle scales (like screwdriver/bottle opener...), a phillips screwdriver you can pull out the backspacer, and maybe a Saw/file as a second blade whith a contoured back so it doesn't mess up the handle ergonomics but is integrated in it. The knife would only have to be a few millimeters thicker than a standard Endura and the "knife ergonomics" would still be intact. With interchangeable tools the users/customers even could individualize theyr "tool endura".

I wouldn't carry a multi tool for it's knife blade eighter, I would rather end up carrying a multi tool AND a knife. So you could even go one step further and solve this problem making a multi tool with plyers and all, but with an ergonomic knife handle and a "real" blade. Of course that's a tough task but I think it could be done and the market is there.

Just some ideas.
Tom

You mean something like this?

i think SAKs are just mediocre cluster of alot of ok quality tools.....i myself like spyderco for a knife and leatherman or sog for a multi tool.........if spyderco's multitools where of the same caliber as there knifes, i think they would give a some what reputable cumpany such as sog or maybe even leatherman some stiff competition.... the byrdwrench just doesn't seem to do it for me personally

....and to roger, i believe it was metioned elsewhere though not recommended the wave on an endura would open bottles

That's the one I was planning on buying before I found out the Mules were up for sale. I'd like to have something similar but with a better blade steel and a few less tools so that it would be slim enough to be comfortable clipped in the pocket. I've heard quite a few people say that the Trekker is uncomfortable for pocket carry.

Honestly something like an Endura but with a built-in prybar/bottle opener/flathead screwdriver would be pretty sweet. Also, please make the tip pointier.

I would be very interested in just a two blade knife, one plain blade and one saw blade. I'm a hiker/camper and having a saw around is always nice. :D

Like a trapper hunter style. One blade, one saw.

The dyad had 2 blades so they have done it before, somewhat.

The only Army knife yer gonna see is the Boulder Colorado Army Knife! jk. I hope you get your wish!

This is a great thread, I would definatly be interested in a delica with a swing out screwdriver/can opener
