Howdy folks-

I ran across one of these when I was about to place an order at SMKW. Does anyone have one of these, or have any experience with them? I'm a sucker for surplus rucks.

Nope, looks interesting and the price is right. I'm partial to my German ruck, but also enjoyed playing with the Swedish 35Ltr w/exterior frame. The Swiss and Swedish are noted for their rugged packs, but they usually weigh in on the hefty side.

i dont have one but i did check it out at a surplus store... It was way too heavy.. Just didnt feel right if you know what i mean.. I too have a german ruck as longbow does and i realy like it.. Been on some long hard hikes with it.. Its not the best as some new ones are.. But its sure is not bad compare to the new ones.. hope that helps some.

I have that exact same ruck and i like it, has a very sturdy good quality construction. The only draw back i have is that the shoulder straps are to hard (bare lather), maybe some mods should sort that out. Other than that they great and very very water resistant, usefull for river crossings or hiking in the tropics.

Can some one post a link or pic of there German ruck.

That pic makes it look very sloppy. That dude is ate up like soup sandwich, tore up from the floor up. It tightens up better then that doesnt it? I would hope so, cause it looks like you could spill gear out everywhere.

I like the design though, looks real old school!

i've got a couple of the swiss ruck version of salt-and-pepper canvas with leather bottom and straps. like others said, it's heavy but well built. one of the shoulder straps ripped (carrying too much groceries in it) on one of them but they are used rucks, not new and the leather wasn't well cared for. i used one on a mountain bike camping trip once - it worked well but my shoulders were sore by the end of it. they have stiff backs but they don't distribute much weight to the hips. hard-working packs but not made for really heavy loads, imo. great if you need a spare, tough-as-nails, go-bag for the truck.

here's a pic:

Here's mine. It has been used for week long stays, but is better used as a 3 day pack. The shoulder straps are padded and the waist belt is a waste of time, but it carries well without. The side pockets are side sewn only, so that long thin gear like skis, etool, or a small axe can be carried. There are D rings on the top flap for lashing oversized gear like bedroll. Tough canvas construction. Large pocket inside so that the fold up German sleep mat can be stowed inside. The top flap is lined, so it repels water and the bottom is water resistent.

I have that green swiss one. If you find that the ancient leather straps are stiff and hard (petrified), just rub Snow Seal into them, and set it in the hot sun all day. The Snow Seal soaks in and softens the leather, making it good to go.

Do not bend or flex dried out hard old leather. It will crack first, and then you're done. Soften it up with Snow Seal first.
