Swiss Tech Micro Plus 8 in 1 tools are offered in black hardened 4650 tools steel, or solid 420 stainless steel in Silver, or Gold (Titanium Nitride) Finish. Does anyone have an opinion about which of these are a better choice?

I have a Swiss Tech Micro Technician in silver and it's made in 4140 steel. Good stuff. Tough, hard enough to cut surprisingly thick steel wires (up to 2 millimeters) without chipping or denting and although I carry it every day, it is yet to be rusted. Amazing little b*****d, the best gadget I've ever had.

It doesn't seem as if these items are made of 4140 any more. Are 4650 or 420 steels equivalent?

Their product literature shows the silver and gold micro 8-in-1 as 420 stainless and the black oxide as 4140 steel. If they are discontinued, there are plenty left to grab. I have one that apparently isn't made anymore and was called a marine model and it has a hole drilled through the straight screwdriver leg parallel with the blade. I guess it was for a lanyard. No idea what steel wa sused other than it is stainless. Handy little tools though-- I rebuilt a server with one :)

While shopping for Swiss+Tech tools a year ago, I saw some of the black tools had already started to rust inside the package while on the store shelves.

I have a shiny stainless ScrewzAll which has not rusted.

That "4650" came from a product description in an internet seller web site , not from the Swiss Tech catalogue, so I guess 4140 is the proper steel designation for the black model. They have not been discontinued and are sold locally for $10. Both black and SS versions look good to me, but since there is a choice, I was only wondering if there is any difference other than cosmetic.

I have the little 4 in 1 in 420J2 in my backpack and the 8 in 1 in 4140 black oxide, I got it used off ebay for $3 shipped with a bunch of other swiss gadgets and knives, it is really one neat little gadget.

Yeah, my black one rusted but it comes right off with some oil. Just surface rust. I have the 4 in 1? it has a wire cutter, pliers and flathead and phillips screwdrivers.

I meant the other 4 in 1, my mistake I have the 4 in 1 that is all screwdrivers, not really as useful as the plier model, but it's in my backpack.
