The poll in the other thread is asking which you prefer between the Swisstool and Leatherman - it is more about people likes and dislikes.

The question I wanted to ask is: if you were stuck in the wilderness or a desert island (ie no sending a defective tool back to the manufacturer for repair) which of these two would you want to have with you?

My Leatherman Wave. I had a swisstool, and gave it away because I didn't like it. Tools are too tough to get out without hurting your nails, and it's too heavy. My Wave has a wood saw, metal saw/diamond file, straight edge knife, and serrated knife. All I would need in the wild. Plus the knife blades open one handed. The Swisstool can't do that. The Wave rules.

A lot of the tools would be useless on a desert island unless its Maui.

How 'bout: if you were stuck in the wilderness or a desert island (ie no sending a defective tool back to the manufacturer for repair) with a broken down desert 4X4 truck, which of these two would you want to have with you?

  How did I get on this desert island with a 4X4 truck?

Same here, an LM Wave or Surge, with a reliable 'Bolo' knife should be enough.

Btw, if I had a 4x4 Truck with me, I guess I would have all the tools I need and then some. hehe.

I guess you guys will be ok with your leathermans if its in the desert , but desert island  best stay away from the sea shore then , they might rust :p

Swisstool all the way for me , I've only ever heard of one guy on here breaking the jaws on a Swisstool but Leathermans  Ive havnt got time to write about all the 'My Leatherman broke ' threads as I've got to leave the house in an hour :D

Dunc

Yes, I agree. For example screwdrivers would not be of much use for their intended purpose, but only as an improvised use such as a large flat head being used a pry tool.

You might also need some gas for that 4X4....unless you had it strapped up to island giraffes, or a troop of highly motivated spider monkeys.

ok, then WHICH of the tools is gonna have a gasoline tool included ?!

and I wouldnt care how I got the 4x4, I would be glad to have it! and the pretty pirate gal driver and the reservation at the Maui Hilton!

i have a krydex sheathed Ka-Bar and its got a LM Wave and a nice light rigged to it, that one sort of thigh pack seems too be all i ever need.

Swistool - too heavy and clunky for day to day use normally - but in the scenario you mention it would be the best I think.

I have been on a few desert islands of our remote Pilbara coast here in West Oz and with the amount of flotsam that floats up onto the beaches, a multi-tool would come in handy for turning it into usefull items.
