Swisstool Vs Leatherman - a variation

You could think of it this way, you are on your own so you don't want your tool to break. With tools seams to be the most reliable? I have not heard of many Swiss tools breaking but some Waves have. Any thoughts...

Old model Leatherman Wave. I don't like the bitholder on the new one.

Swisstool for sure. I think it would hold up better against corrosion, it feels more solid so if you had to pound on something it seems like it would hold up better. Also it's so nice and shiney you could use it to signal passing ships and planes. :)

I have LMs in the Surge, Old Wave, and Juice S4 versions. I also have a Swisstool. I would take the Swiss one into the wild and the LMs are better in civilization.

I like the tool locking smoothness better on the Swisstool. The saw is better. The file is better. The corrosion resistance is better. The only things I find the least bit lacking about it are that it has to be blade accessed two handed and the bull nose pliers aren't quite as useful as the needlenoses of the LM tools.

I do think the Swiss one is also tougher than most flavors of LM, especially those LMs using the bit holders and swappable saw/file blades.

the swiss tool is the one I would pick. All my leatherman tools have rust on them.the swiss tool has a much better fit and finish.

Swisstool - and I own an Original, Wave and Juice. If you're stuck in the wilderness making more tools is the real task of the first tool, and the Swisstool would do a better job handling woodcrafts - especially the awl for repairs. The Wave comes in second for actual camp jobs - one hand opening is nice, but the diamond saw can't sharpen anything on the tool itself, etc.

Of course, working on a vehicle means a pair of pliers and a screw driver are about bottom of the list for repair tools. A 4X4 isn't a carb and points Fiat from the '60s (that's a piece of Leatherman lore,) it's all about a voltmeter and fuel availability. Things are really different under the hood now.

When I first read the part about a broken down 4X4 in this weird fantasy, I didn't think in terms of what multitool to fix it, but what do I need as a survival tool in the local environment now that I am stuck.

There is damn little a multitool can offer to get machinery to do the right thing. Funny, though, how unexpected situations come up now and then. On such occasions in the last several years, it was my Leatherman tool got me on the road again, despite that I carry proper tools in my car trunk.

Once, imobilized on the coldest day of the year, the trunk lock was frozen shut so I couldn't get at my tool kit. Fortunately, the problem was low tech, easily fixed with my Super Tool. Another time my windshield wiper stopped working while in a driving rain. Instead of getting out and standing in the heavy downpour while emptying a loaded trunk to get at one of my wrenches, I hopped out with Leatherman in hand to tighten the retaining nut on the wiper blade. In 30 seconds we were on our way. Two years later, on another trip in another car, same thing happened, same remedy applied.

That's the thing about these gadgets. They are almost never the right tool for the job, just there when needed.

My EDC is either a Gerber 800 or a LM Charge XTi but if i was stuck in the wilderness LM Supertool would be my choice with out a doubt its big clunky and old school but it has 2 blades and a saw which can save you if you break one of the blades
