Sword cane

I have the CS City Stick and it's one tough stick!

I also have a CS City Stick and am very happy with it. I wanted a sword cane for a while, just for the novelty, but after that wore off I bought the city stick and haven't looked back. I don't want to add to my collection of weapons that are illegal outside my home, as they just sit and collect dust. They are nice to have, but after a while I regret my purchase if I can't really use or carry the stuff I own.

I carry an Irish Blackthorn walking stick. Not a fake one such as Cold Steel sells but an authentic one that I ordered from a guy in Shillelagh, Ireland.

Thankfully, I've never had to use it but I feel reasonably confident that it would be a fairly effective deterrent.

Got this from the HighRoad:

790.10 Improper exhibition of dangerous weapons or firearms.--If any person having or carrying any dirk, sword, sword cane, firearm, electric weapon or device, or other weapon shall, in the presence of one or more persons, exhibit the same in a rude, careless, angry, or threatening manner, not in necessary self-defense, the person so offending shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

It would seem that a sword cane, and specifically a CCW=

According to this quote, it sounds as if having one isn't illegal, only improperly brandishing it... is this a state code or a federal one?

"Improper exhibition" being the operative phrase. If I waive about, or improperly exhibit my GLOCK-21, I am guilty of a misdemeanor, and in some counties even a felony. If I carry and use a sword cane for self-defense it is quite legal, as explained to me by my attorney who specializes in concealed carry. Keeping the sword within the cane, except for emergencies, is legal as long as one has a valid Concealed Weapon Permit. Both the county Sheriff and Division of Licensing agree. This is not to stipulate expert legal advice, just what I've been told. I've been forced to use a cane as of late and looked into it but it just wasn't for me. The GLOCK is easier to present, can dispatch ne'er do wells at a far greater distance, and is even probably far more accurate than my rusty thrust techniques.

Funny thing about certain (all?) laws which can be near to incomprehensible; the local Sheriff said swords would be fine for a former and quite disabled grunt, but don't let us catch you using a Bowie.

Florida is trying to correct these different weapons laws for different counties...it is quite unconstitutional, and hopefully within the month we'll have both open-carry and severe fines for law enforcement departments that condone arrests for SAK'S if the mood is upon them...and get away with it.

Moral of the tale? Carry a gun for self defense if you can. Save the blade for that last ditch.

I am going to make one for myself but I did check into the legal issues of carrying one. You can be charged with carrying a conceled wepon.

I would like to get some plans if any one knows of any. I am going to make one but would like to see some plans for a better idea of making one without going through to much trial and error. I make knifes and have a wookworking shop.

Rolling Ridge - your best bet is to get a concealed weapons permit. With one, carrying a sword cane is NOT illegal in FL. (I have a CWP). From my reading of Florida Firearms 7th edition as it describes FS 790 as well quoted here previously, you are covered if the blade is concealed in the cane (ie it becomes a 'concealed' weapon at that point) or, oddly, you would be covered if the blade were out as Florida allows anything but prohibited weapons to be carried openly so long as it is not in a "rude, careless, angry, or threatening manner -- unless necessary in self defense."

Same principle applies to those collapsible batons. When part of the weapon is hidden in collapsed state it is concealed and you would need a CWP for that. When extended you are OK.

I have a Kabar defensive cane .No blade but heavy duty.Haven't smashed any chipmunks yet !
Proper training is the proper way to do it ! Just like you train with your pistol , RIGHT ???

I have a CCW permit in Florida and carry a Burger cane with a stilleto blade. Quality cane but very expensive new. I bought mine used from a forum member.
