I inherited this sword from a great uncle who was in Europe during WWI. That is the only background I have. I am so intrigued by the markings stamped on theag
Sword and scabbard. Are the initials X'ed out soldiers that died and sword given to next soldier? Also, how should I treat the rust problem? Any thoughts or knowledge shared will be appreciated!!

It is a Prussian Faschinenmesser (fascine knife) Model 1864. Weapons got recycled.

The marks breathe to unit, regiment, company and weapon number. I am horrible at reading these but some have it down pat.

That's a great family heirloom. The markings are unlikely to represent soldiers who died. On many military swords, stamped markings are typically inspection, acceptance, arsenal, unit, or inventory marks rather than records of individual owners. If the initials have been crossed out, it could indicate the sword was transferred between units, reissued, or updated in military inventory, but it's impossible to say without seeing the specific stamps.
