Syderco Moran How Good?

Took another look at this recently. Moran design. VG-10. Handle concept ahead of it's time. Supposedly a Moran edge (I believe this is referred to as a rolled edge). Nicely finished. Kydex. Great price.

OK, so it's made in Japan, so is the Falkniven F1 in VG-10.

Is this a sleeper?

Is the quality consistently high, heat treated for max performance, or just another inexpensive production poser piece?

And how does this design rate as a defensive piece?

When I say defensive, I mean that you detect that the other guy is going to make his move and you cut him before it happens (and before he sees it).

Please don't refer me to Fred Perrin's review (it's got a good beat and you can dance to it).

Ron,

I can't believe I got in here before the Mighty Bald1, Prophet of the Moran. His comments have persuaded many of us here to buy this knife. It is indeed a sleeper, especially at current prices. You could check out the Moran thread on the Spyderco Forum for some background and also Bob's post in the "I'm Switching-any suggestions?" thread on the Reviews Forum.

The VG-10 steel holds an edge very well, the blade geometry is excellent for utility and the handle is very comfortable and ergonomic.
As Bob points out, far more knowledgable people than me also see it as a useful defensive knife. I find it particularly comfortable in a reverse grip.

In short, buy it, you won't be disappointed.

(OK, Bob, how did I go, was it up to your standard?)

Clay,

You make me proud

!!! Your advise is on the money. And the reference to the other threads too, although it's the "FB pocket carry" on the Tactic forum vice the "I'm switching..." in the Review area although they are quite similar in scope. Ron, try the search feature for Moran....you'll be amazed at the information available.

One solid last point. I know of no one who has posted disappointment or dissatisfaction with this blade. That's something to dwell on.

By thway, from everything I've heard about the Fallkniven series including that F-1, they are fantastic knives in their own right. James Mattis, among others, speaks very highly of that model, and I value his opinion.

Don't think you can go wrong with either! Enjoy!

Clay...you beat me 'cause I was off shooting an indoor 22Lr pistol match and didn't hit the forums until late tonight. But I love it when a good man hits the issue as square as you've done!

Bob,

It is such a relief to have your approval

. It was with some trepidation that I dared to comment on your favourite topic. I do apologise for the mistake with the threads, it was indeed the "FB pocket carry" thread. I was wrong once before, but I can't quite remember when

, I'll just put it down to nerves.

Oh yes the mighty Moran which was not a sleeper but more like a sleeping volcano until recently when Spyderco changed the price point. Now this fixed blade is flying off the shelves. Don't expect the price point to last too long as Spyderco is actually loosing money on it right now. So grab them while you can. Even at a modest price increase it is still going to be a great buy.

Just got mine in the mail last night (Thanks, SD Matteson!). I love this knife! I think I need another one already.

The handle ergonomics are incredible. Somehow, it feels bigger than it is. I mean this ina good way -- it is not unwieldy or anything. I look at it on the table and think, "man, that's smaller than I expected." Then when in hand, it feels like there is alot more to it, probably due to the comfy handle and excellent edge presentation.

The mirror finish is beautiful. Even my girlfriend was impressed (usually, she is like, "great -- another knife *sigh*") The Moran edge is quite impressive as well.

Thanks to Bob (bald1) and Greg (Kodiak PA) for turning me on to this knife!

Clay
