Sydie Newbie ?'s

That's one of the best answers I've ever received.

Ummm, really? You start a thread because you're looking for a new Spyderco, then Mr. MBA comes in and accuses the company of "shameful" business practices and you think that's a great answer?

Have you seen the number of models Spyderco produces? Perhaps consider that production capacity will force them to sometimes retire older models in order to introduce new ones.

Are you familiar with Spyderco's widely publicized commitment to Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and that the UKPK, Caly 3, Caly 3.5, and arguably the Chaparral are all considered to be extensions of the Jr?

Are you aware that sometimes sales for established models (of many different products) fall as consumer preferences change, or sometimes never sell very well at all, only to later become "classics" or to gain a cult following after they are no longer available?

Did you know that Spyderco follows a formula for fixed profit margins and has remained committed to it even in the face of soaring demand (and prices) for some of their products on the secondary market?

Just some things to think about.

I thought it was a good answer based on the fact that the mighty dollar makes things the way they are. If all spyderco cared about was their quality and their customers then they would go out of business. Strategy and planning are used in many companies. Walmart sells items for less than it cost them hoping you will buy the other items where they stick you a bit. It doesn't make them "bad" just helps them turn a profit. I also never said it was shameful...
While I have your attention I will say I think it's funny when someone makes an comment or observation about a certain company/product and some fan for the company comes out swinging:)

Yeah, I'm a fan :) Guilty as charged.

On re-read it does sounds a little harsh, in my head the tone was more incredulous. I do think the other poster's claims are unfounded and one-sided though. He did also directly say the practice was shameful.

I stand by my points.

(As an aside, I saw the thread about your business name being challenged a while ago. I can empathize somewhat, as my Dad had a similar challenge on his business years ago. What a pain!!)

Fair enough. I'm a fan too  I just lost my Dfly and I'm in search of another.

They do it to drive up market price so that when they reintroduce the same knife 3-4 years later, they can do so at an inflated price due to the demand. The tooling, CAD files, etc are all there - they monitor the internet and Ebay sales prices - it's free market research at the cost of the consumer being able to rightfully obtain a blade that they want for at least the MSRP.

Well this wording does have an accusatory feel to it, but I'm not outraged, just see it a Lil different... Oh man off topic but my phone capitalized Lil like I MUST be talking bout a rappers name...

Any who, all companies can do such practices and its up to the consumer to not buy the overpriced stuff. Its how a company does these things too that shows there character. In spydercos case, I think they offer a huge line of very consistent and affordable high quality products. If they have other knives they want to be more collectable and exclusive then they should be able to control production. I don't like companies that way overcharge on EVERY knife, but honestly of someone's gonna pay for it then why shouldn't they?

Also, its not at the cost of consumers b/c if you wanna buy a more affordable model you can. If you want one that happens to be more collectable and rarer then you pay more.
