Not all khukris carry the symbol (trident sign) of Kali near the hilt.

How did this symbol become part of the khukri?

Is there any special significance in having the symbol on the khukri? I notice most khukris have that symbol but not all khukris have it.

Why?

In my utter ignorance I thought the trident was Shiva's. Kali is one of the female Hindu deities. According to contributions in khukuri FAQ, the precise significance of the symbol has been lost in the mists of time. I always merely tell my khukuri admirers that the symbol has Hindu religious significance. I most often prefer to call the symbol a cow hoofprint if I have to. One can visualise the symbol easily as a cow hoofprint (if you know cows). However, the trident does seem to stand out if you know what you're looking for. Then again, the symbol has been compared to some other things as well, referring here to the reproductive apparatus of the deities! You really have to use your imagination for that, depending.

I BET that somewhere in the interior of Nepal there is a shaman or some like holy man or religious guru who still can explain or confirm the actual meaning of the symbol.... how exciting to think about it.

Believe it or not, nobody really knows how it originally got there (if somebody DOES know for sure, please let me know!).

I remember about 5 or ten years ago when US cavalry caried some really cheap khuks they said it was the trident of Shiva. I'm not saying this is a good source of information but more of a proof to an ancient Taoist saying, "Those who talk don't know, those who don't talk know."
