Synthetic Sticks?

Bandit,

I'm sorry that I can't answer your question, but I'm curious how you like the migstix? Do you have the 19" or a longer custom stick? Also, which thickness?

Thanks very much for your opinion.

My bet would be cut and polished from round stock, bought in bulk from the supplier.

The Migstix are great I have the thinner models. I am most impressed they don't fly out from my hands constantly.

Please let me know if anyone can find a supplier of this kind of stock. I am interested in a special project.

You might also want to consider Polycarbonate tubing stock, its quite a bit lighter, MUCH faster, and for most FMA intents and purposes is indestructable.

Of course, Dave Fulton & "The Crew" has me hooked on the smell of burning Rattan now :D

Triangles, Triangles, Triangles!!!

Nevermind. I just found it. Anyone interested do a search on Delrin.

Bandit,

You may want to consider the polycarbonate as Pete suggested.

If you're leaning towards the delrin, check to see if there is more than 1 grade or type of it. I had a local plastic shop cut two delrin sticks (the plain white stock) for me a while back and I was not at all satisfied with them. In fact, they just sit around unused now. I bought them to use on our tire dummy (because it shreds rattan like there's no tomorrow), but those delrin sticks vibrate terribly when you hit something solid.

Try the polycarbonate tube ... or polycarbonate rod stock. As I recall Jeff Finder sells a stick that's solid polycarbonate, so you might be able to find some.

If you try the solid polycarbonate, let me know how you like it.

Thanks!

I have a 24" and a 28" Mig Stix, both in 1" diameter. Out of the two, I prefer the 24". The 28" feels a little bit flexible, and doesn't move as fast as the 24".

Speaking of Synthetic Sticks

Do any of you all put tape or something else on the "grip" end to keep it from getting slippery?

I guess the mig sticks are knurled or splined from the pix on their website. Is it aggressive enough to keep a positive grip?

Dave,

While rummaging around in the hubris of my workshop, I just found a piece of 1" OD Delrin tubing (Bearing Stock) obtained from the same source as yours was, but about fifteen years ago.

I did a side by side "wack the dummy test" tonight.

The Delrin tubing does not feel as neutral as the polycarbonate and buzzes a bit upon impact.
When I get my leetle supply, one experiment is to fill the P/C tubing with an expandable foam to further negate the bounce.

I have some I&I synthetic sticks. I wrapped the grip area with some bicycle handlebar tape. Feels good and no slipping

Bandit, do not get delrin sticks they are slippery and just really bad to use them for training. Get a stick made from wellman 6/6 this is a incredible stick- pretty lightweight and really strong-its a type of nylon-I have been using them for years and they take abuse-delrin is strong but it will dent easily. Now polycarbonate is also a great stick but you can get at least half a dozen wellman sticks for the price of a pair of poly sticks. Thanks for your time Nightwing

Danceswithknives, you can find wellman 6/6 at any plastic supply house. they will have any size you want and just about any diameter-I usually get 24" long by 7/8 diameter-I get about a dozen sticks and it costs like 16.00 dollars and they cut them for me also- if you cant find it where you live let me know-I'll find a place close to you. Thanks for your time, Nightwing

Nightwing,

I can't seem to find any suppliers around. Please let me know if you can recommend anyone online or local.

Thanks

ED

Nightwing,

I'm curious about the Wellman 6/6, but I'm confused by some of your comments about it. You say it's really tough material, but apparently you are buying it in bulk. Are you buying it in bulk due to failure, or because you're supplying it to others? If it is due to failure, can you give us an estimate of the average life of a wellman 6/6 stick?

I'm considering some polycarb sticks, which I hear typically hold up for years. Since, I've never heard of the wellman, I'm interested to hear how it holds up in comparison to the polycarb.

Thanks in advance!

Dave Fulton

Dave, No I buy alot of them because they give me a better price and then I just sell to others in my class or to people that just want them for whatever reason. wellman 6/6 is a nylon material usually in a yellow or black color-I guess you could get it in any color if you wanted-the stuff is really strong, little or no vibration when you hit something like concrete-very hard to dent-its used to make gears in machines they also make bearings out of the stuff-polycarbonate is good stuff to,its just kinda expensive and it can be heavy-and its sometimes hard to get ahold of the stuff (where I live anyways)I hope that this answers your questions, if not let me know and I'll get you some information on wellman6/6. thanks for your time, Nightwing

Bandit, try here Plastic Hut 804-359-1374 and try this one to, Commercial Plastics 804-353-0090.Tell them you want wellman 6/6 rods-hope this helps thanks for your time Nightwing

Dave,
Maybe we can check out the Wellman 6/6 vs my HITS in the near future.
But it just WON'T smell like burning Rattan! :)

Nightwing9,

Isn't most Nylon hydroscopic?

What is its UV suceptability <SP?> to embrittlement / deterioration over time?

You might not know these answers, but I gotta ask and try to learn.
