I'm a new maker and I make using knives. When the chips are down, synthetic wins. You can't go past canvas Micarta.
Stablised wood is good if you want looks; I use it on the pretty knives. But stabilised wood is NOT as tough as some would like to think. Because most stabilised woods are the exotic, fragile, burls, easy to chip variety - thats why they need to be stabilised.
Micarta will likely outlast the steel on the blade for goodness sakes. In 2000years time, your Micarta handled tactical will be unearthed by some keen archeologist. It will likely look like a PATCH OF RUST WITH CANVAS MICARTA SLABS.
Aside from all this, has anyone thought about JAPANESE STYLE WRAPPED HANDLES, IMPREGNATED WITH EPOXY. I advocate this highly (because I make a lot of them). You can't beat the grip. If probably done, the entire handle is sealed and solid as a rock. It retains a grip dry, wet and also under water. You can apply it to any shape grip, and the fact that it goes best with full tang blades means the knife is as strong as it gets. The wrap is WRAPPED around the handle not pinned onto the sides. Its just not coming off.
Thoughts anyone ?
