T J Elpel videos, anybody have them?

Cool! I'll have to look into them. We're always looking to add to our "Outdoor Skills" collection.

His quality is not as good as Hoods Woods, but they definately get into primative detailing. You'll find he's a little robotic in voice, but they are pretty good.

I have 4 of his books. The one on primitive skills is great. He is a minimalist that likes to survive by less gear and less effort.
I think he is for real. His botony book is great too.

I would like to buy his videos but for the funds.

Codger, I've been eyeballing those fresnal lenses for a while now.
That's a bargain!

Would be good to keep right there sandwiched in with a signal mirror. Compact, can't get much more.

You can't get much more basic then a fresnal lens. And it will fit in even the smallest bag, or even in the lining of a bag, or a wallet. I have a magnifying lens, but it is glass and weighs an ounce or so. This must weigh in the grams. It is dependent upon the sun to work, but it would be one more alternative to add to any kit.

Look at the material descriptions on their fire bow kits too.

Yup, just read through all their fire products, real good info.

I'm thinking one fresnal lens in the wallet, and one in the PSK.
Alternate usage their too, use as a magnifier for small stuff.

These are 5x, which is pretty darn powerful. I think my 3" glass magnfying lens is only 3x.

.... but it would be one more alternative to add to any kit. Codger

Not to mention their usefulness for removing splinters and aiding in plant identification, and maybe threading needles (at my age).:(

I also have 2 of Tom's books - Botany in a Day, and Field Guide to Primitive Living Skills. I haven't spent a lot of time with either, yet, but from what I've seen, they look quite good.

I've found fresnal lenses at Barnes & Noble in 2 sizes. One is wallet sized and goes for about $3. The other is a bit larger. My dad ended up with my wallet-sized one, but the bigger one is still in my kit. I haven't tried to start a fire with it yet.

I have the Video where he and his cousin camped with the dog. I found it informative and enjoyable. And yes, if he's going to keep making videos, a class on public speaking couldn't hurt. He speaks in a monotone, but the videos are intersting.

I recommend. :D

If you're wanting to purchase Fresnel Lenses, the cheapest I've found is http://3dlens.com/shop/fresnellens.php .

Credit Card Magnifier Fresnel Lens, 10 - 24 lens, is $0.58 each. I picked up 10 of the credit card lens, plus several larger lens..., and their all cheaper than any other I've found.

It takes a couple weeks to get them, though...., the company if Tiawan ;)

I think he's for real. I've been fooling around with primitive skills since I was about fourteen. Not an expert, but you learn some things when you go it alone. Not wasting time and effort is one of them. I've read his books and have lived not to dissimillarilly to him (in the past). But his prices...Now I understand the JOB TRAP  !
