I'm a novice knife maker. I have difficulty drilling slotted hole for hidden tang. I use a drill press but in drilling second hole next to an existing hole the drill tends to walk. Any suggestions.

This question is more appropriate to Shop Talk than Custom & Handmade Knives, so I've moved it there.

Use a center punch to make an indentation first and space them enough so that they don't walk into each other.

If you mean the slot in the handle material for your tang to slide into most drill one hole and then use a small tool with a tooth or 2 on the end of it. The tool goes in the hole then you pull it back scraping material as you go. I goes pretty fast and then you get a good fit. The tool is usually about 1/8" thick and looks like it has a couple saw teeth on the end.

Or, instead of trying to get the holes to overlap, drill them in close proximity using a center punch as suggested, then connect the holes with a broach as described or even a small needle file.

yep i do it like the others on here. i drill a few holes, maybe 3 if thy will fit. then use a broach and scrape it out.

A Dremel tool with a small carbide burr will make short work of the web between the drill holes. That's what I used untill I got my milling machine.
