Now that looks good.

South of town, here's a place on Nutty Brown Road called The Nutty Brown Cafe. For some reason, that just came to mind, so:

I'd call it "Old Nutty Brown"

Looks like a snickers bar to me. How about Snickers.

It looks better imo.

Thanks r8shell, KBA. It's been a fun project that may not be finished. It really is an impressive old knife.
Hoping I can find out more about it.

redsparrow, I like your version so much better! Congrats and well done :thumbup:

Cheers.thanks for the update.Looks pretty sweet now.How bout the pull on that penblade?I'm reminded of the m2ovie Spinal Tap-most amps go to 10,these go to 11.It literally broke my nail.

redsparrow, the latest makeover of the knife is a resounding success, IMHO!!:thumbup: Fantastic job!
I don't really have a suggestion for its name … Oh, wait a minute, I just thought about its new color, the fact that it's travelled long distances, and a kids' game from my youth popped into my head! Do you know the game Red Rover?:D

- GT

The pen blade was a real challenge. A pull left only to professionals. Notice it's not open in the pics :D, but it's beginning to loosen after several WD40 soakings and I have high hopes. Thanks again Jon, I really am impressed with this one.

5K Qs yes I am familiar with the game, got rough the way we played it, reddish brown was what I was going for. Thanks!

Great old knife. Congrats to you both.

Could call it "Bullwinkle". He was the smarter of the two. Rocky J Squirrel was a moron's moron, he made everyone (except Boris and Natasha) look smart.

Not to mention Fearless Leader.
Fearless Leader?
I said not to mention him.

It is a beauty. the only challenge now apart from a new name is to decipher what that brand stamp says. ..SSE is about all I could get.

Still a nice old Lambsfoot :) Congratulations again

'Renown'? Seen it many times, just need some coffee to get my brain working. I'm just off to a 'car-boot sale', will have a ponder/look through my knives later

How did you dye this, if you don't mind sharing ?

I was just going to ask the same question!
Thank you.
Cate

While the images are long gone, there's an old Maintenance & Tinkering thread that describes dyeing bone with fabric dye: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/868446-Dyeing-Bone-A-Tutorial

I've used this method before with Rit dye (a mixture of red and brown for a nice deep color) and it worked pretty nicely.

Lovely looking old knife! I think it should be named Bloodhound since it's now a deep red/brown color and this name has a little *hat tip* to the "nose" references from the previous name(s).

Thanks all, I've had fun with this one.

Camillus and Cate, I applied heat and wood stain repeatedly.

Jack, I saw another "RENOWN" in the Forum "Old Knives" thread (page 300, post 5998) but I was hoping you might have more info, thanks for considering it. BTW Jack what's a 'car-boot-sale'?

HAPPY FATHERS DAY ALL!!

Sorry for not getting back to you about this, I've been wracking my brain all day, texting friends, checking a few sources. I've not been through all my knives yet. I'm hoping I can turn something up at some point. We need a 'Resources' thread here!

The boot of a car is what you would call the trunk :) About 30 years ago, maybe more, people here started meeting up to sell and trade stuff out of the backs of their cars, often it's just junk, but sometimes old knives turn up. I didn't do very well today though, I was nearly there when the heavens opened, and since these meets are generally held in the open air, if it's raining there's no point going. So I just had to turn round, a 2 1/2 hour wasted journey :( Never mind though, didn't really spoil my day :)
