Has any one ever used a old table saw blade for a knife? and how do you go about making one from it? Has anyone ever made a knife form a old file? how do you go about making one from it? thanks

i believe it was either case or buck that used to make their knives from old files. the experts here can tell you how its done.

First you throw away the saw and buy a foot of 1095 for 3 bucks!

Seriously this comes up all the time and the basic answers are this.

If you want to shape a saw blade into a knife without dammaging the heat treat you can reshape with a file and cut stuff with it.

If you know the exact steel used to make the saw it can be used to make knives just like you would normal steel. Aneal, shape, HT, temper, final finishing.

If you dont know the steel its best to buy a cheap known knife steel like 1080 1095 or the like.

There are other ways like making damascus out of chainsaw blades but thats more advanced at leats in the tools needed. The cheaper knife steels are very cheap and will be the least expensive part of your knife unless you start using super steels. I would just get some 1095/1080.

Modern circular saw blades are mostly a steel base for the carbide teeth. At best they are some sort of high chrome steel. In most all cases they make poor knives. This does not refer to the larger saw mill blades of old, which could have been many different steels, some of which made excellent knives.
Now, that is all good and well, but you still dont know exactly what they are.
Buy some known steel and make knives from that.
See the for sale forum for Aldo and Mace's 1080/1084 steel.

Jacob,
I can't imagine any major knife company making its knives from old files?
