Howdy folks.

I'm hoping that I don't get burned at the stake for asking such a blasphemous question.
(Joking:D)

I totally understand about "the right tool for the job".
Its been discussed ad-nauseum. Multiple, multiple times...

Most of us only carry a knife.
Sometimes a multi-tool, but usually just a knife.

We don't always have a hammer, or a screwdriver, or a prybar.

I've done it. I'll admit it.
My Adamas has been thrown, used as a screwdriver, used as a hammer, and pried stuff with so much force that the centering became off.
With absolutely no long term damage other than scuffs on the blade.

In my line of work, I'm up and down ladders and stairs CONSTANTLY. Carrying my Adamas is cumbersome.
And my tools are often-times quite-a-ways away.
Random things pop up that require a bit more "abusive" knife tasks.
I'm allowed to carry my knives there, and I can speak from experience that Case knives and the like just stay in pocket. They'd be 'hurtin of they were used much.

A Delica or a Rat-2 is about perfect for size, weight, steel, etc.

So now is where "you" come in.
I know you're out there somewhere...:D

Have you pried or "abused" your Delica or Rat-2 (or similar) and how did it hold up?

I have not. But those particular knives I would not trust to survive that type of abuse.

I generally will not use a folder for anything but cutting. I would never use one for anything other than that because with my luck, there would be a lock failure, broken tip, or something else.
However, I have and will continue to use certain fixed blades for anything under the sun. My primary go-to FB for rough jobs is my Strider DB. This thing is a chisel, prybar, hammer with a cutting edge. I have used it to dig out rocks in the ground, it easily breaks apart wooden pallets, and yes I have been known to throw it a time or two. The tip is strong enough that I know it will not break and there are no moving parts that could fail.

The only folders that I have pried with more than once or twice are a CRKT Razel folder (both large and stubby), and my SAK that I carry all the time. Like everything, it depends on how hard or rigorous the prying is. My suggestion is that you consider a fixed blade if you do this often. It would be just as handy. A small tool belt also helps with carrying and having other tools available.

I think a saber ground delica would stand up to a lot more abuse than most would think. No personal experience to speak from sorry :(

I have a CRKT M16-14SFG as a work knife that is a TOOL and get abused in more ways than I would even care to discuss even in the Pirates Cove. I will brake it one day, but it was a $60 knife and it's still here 3+ years into this abusive relationship. It has far beyond gotten me out of $60 worth of binds and saved me that many more steps!
Now my casual and dress knives are used for cutting only.

Sent via telegraph with the same fingers I use to sip whiskey.

I especially feel the FFG Delica's tip will not hold up to prying. The blade is not designed for this use at all. The Rat2 would probably old up slightly better to tip prying hut probably not much.

On the other hand there are folders that stand up to this use quite well. I have used my CQC7 for all types of tasks. This includes prying and using the butt as a hammer. (This is why I prefer the backspacer style Emersons to the standoff versions. The backspacer type has a perfect butt for hammering.) Part of what makes this and knives like the Adamas more capable is their thicker tip, not to mention their more solid construction.

I live in fear of snapping my tips so I only would pry with my knives with the most robust tips.

Well, the sabre version has a much stouter tip, but I'm a bit weary about the FRN handles and how they would hold up to prying.

The sabre ground Delica would definately hold up better. The modern Delica folders have steel liners and fairly rugged construction, I doubt the FRN build would be a serious problem when prying unless you're talking about some pretty heavy prying.

Try looking at the waved Delica. It has a unique grind which I believe gives it an even stouter tip than even the sabre ground Delica. (Don't quote me on that I could be wrong) The waved Delica is also great for work because the wave feature lets you draw the knife open and ready to use.

The times I have used a knife in such a way were due to my own ignorance and unpreparedness. It is rarely necessary to do such things.

If you're up on ladders all day and need various tools, why don't you just wear bags:confused:

I work with just about every trade out there, and I'm usually the only guy onsite that carries a knife.

I too carry an Adamas as my hard-use/work knife, but I also always carry a multi-tool (Victorinox) and a small titanium pry bar (STR) as well. I don't baby my knives by any means but I just can't bring myself to pry with any of my folders. If a multi-tool is too cumbersome for you, you could possibly take keljian's advice and add a mini pry bar to your carry, maybe something like the Leatherman Piranha which also holds a screwdriver bit. That along with a Delica together would likely weigh less than the Adamas by itself.

It's not so much that prying will be ALL that I do, but more of a once-in-a-while thing.
Think of it like this.

If I spend most of my day driving on asphalt, I'll buy a Corolla.
Can the Corolla drive in a field if the need arises? Yup.

But if I buy a Jeep with mud-tires, it would spend most of its time on the dry pavement anyways.

Hope that made sense.

I came to like my gerber multitool over leathermans for these kinds of task for the simple reason you could take it out of the pouch and flip it open with one hand locking the pliers open, then I had a variety of toys to choose from. Now that I don't carry the Gerber anymore since I no longer work in that environment I find myself myself a few times a year prying on something or other I shouldn't be with a folder. I just figure if I break it doing something stupid, I'll just grind it down and reprofile it, my fault anyways.

I'd look at the gerber multitools myself for ladder work and accessible options which you can get to with one hand.

Consider a Kizlyar Sumpreme Ute?

According to the specs next to an Adamas;
-0.17" thinner and -1.42 oz. Lighter
-0.445" in the blade and -0.125 in the handle

All combined to make it that much less "cumbersome" to carry, but still a lot of knife, with over built liners and g10 scales, capable of taking a beating, and with a built in pry tool/flathead to help spare the tip from unnecessary pry-abuse.

It's my go to workhorse folder, and in the same ballpark $ as a g10/cf rat or delica.

That's an interesting knife.
Never heard of them before, but it looks decent.

Little prybar, Little Multitool or even a SAK's flathead will do the trick everytime, while providing added utility to your EDC. Folders are for other stuff...

even though I've admittedly pried, stabbed hard stuff and abused other thing with my Chinese beaters....($15 or less each)
