TAC Cleaver in CPM-M4

That is very dissapointing :(

But the shape and grinds were very cool and I'd love to see it made again.

So, Ban, what do you plan to do with that broken cleaver? I'd hate to see that thing trashed.................... :)

Damn, sorry to see that. But, bring on the 3V version! That is one crazy looking cleaver for sure. You're really busting out the art now.

I will be making another one for sure. I will try to see what I come up with from the remnants.

Was there anything that could have been done different to prevent the break, Ban? I don't know too much about the techniques involved, but that beast looked pretty robust.

Yes, try not to straighten M4 when it is fully hardened. I had it clamped down with shims to overcompensate the bend. Then it was tempered to 1050F. I stupidly tried to cool it down too fast instead of letting it cool slowly while straightening. The combination of torque applied and rapid temperature change caused the blade to break.

oh yea, I seem to recall you mentioning somewhere that M4 is almost mid-60's in HRC when you're done with it. Can't wait to see what the new one does :) I'm a sucker for choppers & wharnies.

It is in the mid 60s after heat treat and cryo before being fully tempered. It is closer to 61-62 after temper. I prefer it even a bit softer for choppers.
