I was browsing tactical/combat style boots and wondered who makes good ones. Belleville? Bates? Oakely? Altama? or....?

I have boots from all but Oakley. As for "tactical", well, the good thing is many are actually decent enough for everyday wear. I don't like the taller boots. My personal favorites are Wellco's Jungle boots...both the older OD canvas with black leather and their Desert boots I wear for duty. Make sure you put decent insoles in them.

Not sure of your intended purpose, but a decent pair of hiking boots are more versatile in my opinion.

Always been a fan of Bates. Their GTX boot is very nice.

I've also worn:
Magnum - I felt they wore out quickly
Galls - Cheaply made, but also cheap on price
Danner - Nice but pricey

I've heard good things about the new Converse tactical. It basically looks like they took a pair of converse athletic shoes, and raised the top up to 8". The word is, they function like a tactical boot, but feel like you're wearing sneakers. I've never tried them personally.

I'll (hopefully) be ordering a pair of Danner Desert Acadias just in time for fall. I've only heard good things about them. They are heavy (68 ounces) but apparently last through multiple resolings. Canadian troops in Afghanistan ditched their craptacular issue boots for Danners, Hanwags, Meindl's and the like (all good brands). (I like brackets)
