Tactical Design Input:Prototype Pics!

Dr. Lathe:

When I look at knives, I often make the mistake of judging knives purely from a defensive point of view. My wife always said I had a one-track mind.

After re-reading the thread, I realized that I was mistaken and that this knife was designed for utility chores in mind... unless I am mistaken again!

My bad. But for utility chores, I think this blade is perfect as it is. The only reason I can think of to change the design now is strictly based on your own preferences and aesthetic tastes. But then I'm not a knifemaker either so....

My suggestions would be applicable ONLY if the blade is also intended to double as a defensive knife. If that is the case, and the knife is 8" overall, I would guess that the blade is roughly about 4" right? Despite the excellent edge length and recurve, it is still my own humble opinion that a 4" blade is not going to pack enough surface to cut as much as I would personally like. Again, please remember that this is just me. With a 4" blade, stabbing abilities are also in order. With a stabbing knife, you need, at the very least, either a large lower guard or a deep finger groove to prevent your hand from slipping into the blade. Finally, my preference for a defensive knife is either a clip point or drop point. The idea is to make the tip of the blade point lower down. I find that this makes it more intuitive and natural for stabs in both saber and natural grips.

But I can't stress this enough. My suggestions are merely my own. There's nothing wrong with your design at all. So long as it is a design that works for you, that's what matters right?

AWESOME knives, man!!!

My only concern is that the little nob, presumably for better control and stability, in the middle of the handle is a bit wide, and may chafe between the middle and ring fingers.

Aside from that, I can't wait to see the Kydex sheaths!

Keep up the good work

Stompy,
All I can say is that the handle feels good! Myself and several others put the tanto version through pure hell! It cleaned a ton of small saltwater fish and was used to make chum on a trip out of Tampa. I cut sheath leather at the shop with it. Then it was used as a little camp knife on a trip to the keys and cleaned more fish there!! It's no fillet knife but those saltwater fish are a tough test! No one had a single gripe about the grip. The grip sort of compresses your fingers together and it almost feels like it expands when you sqeeze it! My fishing buddies must have stuck it into an oak stump at the campsite about a thousand times, each time trying to bury it in where no one could pull it out!! That was usually in a reverse grip. No slips and it didn't break! I made several with a single finger notch. They feel pretty good too but most everyone wants to try the split finger style!
I am in the process of building my website. I will have pictures of the other variations on there soon.
