Tactical Fixed Blade Recommendations?

It does seem like the Swamp Rat line has been creeping upward in price. That Mini Mojo will set you back $217 with the sheath, which is far more than I paid for my Battle Rat a few years ago.
Yeah, that's basically what put them out of the running for me...too bad, I liked what I saw.

I think they are a pretty good option. It depends exactly what you are after and how you use your knife (even location). They are thinner than Rangers, so theoretically ought to slice better, but the .25 thick Rangers out of 5160 ought to be more indestructible -- Busse on a budget, so to speak.

So think about how and where you use your knife and buy accordingly. Or save your bucks and buy a Busse.

I'm loving what I see in the RD6, but I might actually go with a Scrapper 6 that I just found...hmm, decisions.:D

I like what I've seen on the Ranger website, but can't find a place to buy them or a price for that matter.

My recommendation would be a Becker C/U 7 (I love mine) but those may be hard to find now.

Cost no object I'd get a TOPS Moccasin Ranger or a Falkniven A1. I like these two designs the best.

Also, the Randall knives made by Ontario look good but I have no experience with them and if they are like other Ontarios build quality my be inconsistent I don't know I haven't handled one personally. And you can NEVER go wrong with a classic Kabar USMC knife. Also may want to check out the Glock field knife.

Personally I'd avoid a stainless knife or even D2 knife like the plague with the exception of the laminated Falknivens (which have a rep for being tough as nails) and the Busses which have a rep for being even tougher. Otherwise make my Steel 1095, it's tough, cheap, and easy the sharpen in the field.

I'm trying to decide on a fixed blade tactical knife of about 7" length or so. Right now I've been looking at the Gerber Silver Trident and Ka-Bar D2 primarily...also looked at the Benchmade Presidio and Cold Steel Recon Scout (SK-5 carbon variety for the sake of affordability). I've been looking mostly at the serrated versions if available, although I'm not 100% on that.

What I'm looking for is a knife that will hold an edge well, but also take one fairly easily if it needs some honing...yeah I know, I want to have my cake and eat it too.:D

Basically, what I'm looking for is a fixed blade around 7" that'll serve me well on an Iraqistan deployment. If the blade is thick, that's not necessarily a detriment IMO because I may occasionally find the need to use it as a prybar, hence the reason that didn't put the CS Recon Scout out of the running, although I wish it were 3/16 like the Cold Steel military classic, but then I don't need the MS's micarta handle and leather sheath either. It's gotta be tough, durable, etc...I've heard that the 154CM used in the Gerber can be brittle based on its hardness...holds an edge well but can also chip when used to hack at something (or snap when used as the aforementioned prybar). The $200 pricetag of the knives I'd looked at is about as high as I could go. I don't need something custom or fancy, it's not going to always receive the best treatment, so I don't want to feel bad if it takes a beating, and I'm sure there are mainstream knife manufacturers that make something that would suit those needs. Thanks for any advice you all can offer!

The interesting thing is you could probably get something custom in that price range that would be much, much better than the production pcs. Look in the Maker's Area and see what you can find. I've bought some real nic customs for way under $200. If you have the time before deployment, get a custom. Contact Chase @ ChaxKnives, Bob Dozier makes a great knife usually more than $200 but for Military he might want to help you out. I also like DM Knives(David Mosier) who specializes in Tact. Knives. Good luck shopping. Thanks for your service.

Fallkniven A1.
Cold Steel SRK
Ka-Bar (take your pick)
Or you could shoot an insurgent and take their bayonets. No cost to you and -1 insurgent.

I like what I've seen on the Ranger website, but can't find a place to buy them or a price for that matter.

Brigade Quartermasters is the place. Fair price, reliable service. See Rockon's link.
