tactical flashlight impact bezels

I could have sworn that Surefire actually put out a magazine, or video with Steve Tarani

The original intent was to allow some airflow if the flashlight got turned on and pressed up against something. Such lights can get very hot, possibly hot enough to start a fire, you know. So, if asked why the light has this feature, you can use that explaination.

thats not correct the guy who invented them, lance something or another(BF name hammamitsu, something japanese sounding IIRC), used to post on BF, i remember he came out with them (add on ones) for surefire Z2 and Z3, he had probs because the OD of the lights does vary some, but i digress, they were made with fighting in mind not ventilation, this was also at least a couple yrs before SF ever had them on anything, he sold them thru GG&G and for all i know might still.

still a good story for the police at least if they dont read gun mags lol.

This has a hardened steel strike bezel, albeit it was designed to shatter glass (according to the promotional material). However, in an emergency, I'm sure it could also be used on a person.

Personally, I own Surefires L4 and L1. Some people have commented on the bezel edges potential to be used to strike someone. On these 2 flashlights, Surefire neither advertises nor advocates this. It is there to indicate the flashlight is on if it is left standing face down.

Thanks! I did pick up a Hellfire and I really like it, though it is much larger than I thought it would be. Extremely overbuilt, and the bezel does unscrew which is a nice touch. Very heavy.

I own the hellfire X-11 and ,yes, it could definitely cave in a skull. It is very intimidating which is a positive when coupled with the brightness of it as a detterent. I wish they would make a 2/3 size version for EDC though.
"There to indicate that its left on?" C'mon there's a reason its on the "defender" model!

I also want a smaller one from DarkOps. I keep the hellfire in my car. It is built to take a beating.

Just weighing in with my opinion. Crennelations may cause unecessary attention from LEO/Security types and will cause increased wear and tear to clothing, pouches, etc. My vote is mall-ninja.

Remember, like many other things, my opinion is only worth what you paid for it.:)

I have been carrying a Fenix with aftermarket impact bezel in the pocket of my nylon windbreaker for a month. No noticeable damage. If I carried my Hellfire there, it might be a different story. My SF E2D I carry when out walking clipped in my front pocket. Again, no damage. My X5 with aftermarket bezel needs a clip. It disappears intot pockets and needs to be fished out, but so far no damage. I bought a cheap asian 6P copy, crenelations are very smooth no harm to clothes at all. I am surprised.

Also, I have bben carrying a pocket knife clipped in my front pocket, very obvious, for 17 years - never had a cop look twice. I would be shocked if a flashlight got me any attention. Personally I see nothing "mall-ninja" about the crenelated bezels. I know several LEO and military personel who carry them.
