Tactical folder for self defense

Thank you Larry1066! Everytime someone asks this simple question people do everything but answer it,instead going off on running, pepperspray, training etc.

Never stopping to think the person asking may have a gun, peperspray or tons of training already.Or perhaps they want it for times when those things are not allowed, like on school grounds, work and so on.

He asked what KNIFE so lets answer that question.

I like the BM 710,Microtech LCC and the Endura for lightweight carry.

Many here like the BM AFCK,and Emersons,CQC7 and Comander.

If you want something a little different but still quite effective, look at Cold Steel’s Ti-Lites. All three models look like Italian stilettos with 4 inch blades. The handles are fairly fat, giving them better grips than their slim profiles indicate. They all have extended thumb studs. With a little practice, a Ti-Lite can be drawn so that the thumb stud snags on the pocket, opening the knife automatically as it is drawn (see the More Proof video). Ti-Lites also have integral guards that act as flippers.

New Graham offers the two titanium handled Ti-Lites, one with a natural finish and one with a blue anodized finish, for $112.50 and $126.00 respectively. Both these models have AUS 8A blades. New Graham carries the zytel handled, 440A blade model for $39.37.

One caution about carrying a Ti-Lite: there is no way that a cop will ever believe that it is a utility knife!

SPYDERCO MANIX. I'm sorry, I have to say it. I wasn't a fan of spyderco's design before I saw the manix, and its not neccessarily an elegant looking blade, but just hold it. You'll never look back at benchmades's again. It has a much nicer grip, and you can see how it would protect your hands from sliding onto the blade. Its an extremely well made knife, and you can snag one for about 120 bucks. Definatly feels like it should be selling for 200+

Good luck with your choice.

A good utility knife will better serve you for 99.999% of your daily duties, and it might save you someday in a tussle. Unless a blade is about 8-9"+, it's barely suitable for combat unless you are in a stranglehold and have to deploy it into their thigh etc. It will not cut through most thick clothing and then go deep into flesh, and even 3-4" tanto folders leave a lot to be desired for stabbing attacks. All folders, and most tactical knives, are virtually worthless if your opponent has so much as an arm-length stick in their posession and any reasonable skill at fighting. Save the tactical knives for sneaking up behind sentries and dispatching them, or collecting. Want a combat knife - get a 10-13" Bowie, and good luck carrying it. Even in Texas I can only legally carry a pistol, a machinegun, and a shotgun in public, but not a 10" Bowie.

I carry a Walther PPK, and an ASP baton on my person when in public. I leave my machineguns at home. I have some pepper spray in my trucks.

Your best bet is to get a concealed carry permit and, or, carry a police issue-type pepper spray - and get accurate enough with it to hit their eyes/nose/mouth area out to 5 yards. You stand a good chance of walking away from a pepper spray fight VS a knife fight. And you have a great chance of surviving a gun fight if the other guy has no gun. And if anyone attacked me with a butter knife, I'm relatively certain my ASP would cave in their skull before they knew what hit them since it's relatively easy to make it telescope out as you attack.

The Benchmade Skirmish is excellent, but the blade is a little larger (4.3 inches). It's easier to carry a larger knife than I thought it would be.

it seems like every thread like this one that comes up the 806d2 is sudgested atleast 20 times lol

i love the 806, heck of a knife.

I'm sorry to say, but... Spyderco. From your post I understand that you had negative experience with some older models (integral clipped Endura is discontinued since 1997). I'd like you to take a look at the newer models, like the Manix or the ATR. Maybe some of their models will hit your fancy. Spyderco uses top notch materials and the ergonomics are outstanding.
Spyderco also has some highly specialized tools for SD (Civilian) and MBC (Bram Frank's Gunting - more infos at cssdsc.com) - if you are a Marine, I think you'll like what you'll see there ;).

i really like my spyderco ATR ti and my extrema ratio fulcrum, the BM 806 is ok too but i much prefer the skirmish, emerson CQC8 and SOCFK are good also. of them all the ti ATR is my 'current' fav..........
