tactical folder

I love the Lone Wolf T2. You can still find them on auction sites, but they have been discontinued. Feels great in the hand, solid lock up.

When I hear "Tactical" I think Self Defense automaticly. My Pen Can be "Tactical" Emerson makes Very Good "Tactical" designes if you only Intent is to use against a Human.

I don't know how "tactical" it is, but the Benchmade 710 is about as heavy duty a folder as you can find. If you need more than that, you'll need a fixed blade.

A plus for the 710 is that it carries like a small knife, as opposed to some tacticals that are like clipping a brick to your pocket.

I Like the Benchmade 710 as an All around Knife though. It is Very Handsom, But the blade shape allows for DEEP Penatration and has Great slashing Belly. It is not, in My Opinion looking too weapon like. It's Kind if Like a gentlemans "tactical" Knife. In Satin finish especially. Can't get much more knife then that for the price.

also Spyderco Military.

But when you say "tactical" I think use on Human, Get Small Concealable fixed blade. Dozier or Al Polkoski. Way too many choices.LOL.

Or Like the officer said, the Kbar TDI series are made for fast draw and shaped the way they are for High stress, when gross motor skills are all you have left.

If you want Tough, go with an Axis Lock, a (Depending on Price range) ZT Frame lock, Or Rick Hindererer or Strider. Doesn't get tougher in a folder then those 3. Especially ZT and Strider with the GIGANIC Pivot. SEB too, But Inlayed or too slick(IMHO) the blade would fail before the lock or Pivot. then in that case you need a carbon steel fixed blade if you need tougher then that.

Since some of yall said "define tactical", heres what the Oxford says..

tactical |ˈtaktikəl|
adjective
of, relating to, or constituting actions carefully planned to gain a specific military end : as a tactical officer in the field he had no equal.
• (of bombing or weapons) done or for use in immediate support of military or naval operations. Often contrasted with strategic .
• (of a person or their actions) showing adroit planning; aiming at an end beyond the immediate action : in a tactical retreat, she moved into a hotel with her daughters.

tactical is the pc way of saying its designed to be used against other people, thats all.

I don't agree at all. The word 'tactical,' as used within the knife industry, has always been used in association with knives that can be deployed quickly and used in unconventional settings and situations. The guys to ask are Sal Glesser, Bob Terzuola, and Ernest Emerson. They wrote the book on 'tactical knives'!;)

For purposes of the original poster's question, it is irrelevant what the dictionary or any of us mean by tactical. We need to know what he is looking for, and by throwing all of it on the one word without telling us what he means by it, he has sent the thread on a wild goose chase.

Can I define "tactical" as "practical for use in extreme situations"? Situations, not necessarily in a combat environment, where you need to produce a blade quickly and reliably, possibly whilst wearing gloves, and one-handed.

When I think tactical folders, I think: Benchmade Griptilian, TSEK, AFCK and 710, and Spyderco Endura, Salt range and Military.

My point was that I think the word Tactical is just hype and not really applicable to a knife at all. A knife is a cutting tool... it can be used as a weapon but it makes a poor one (Especially a Folder) But it's best suited being used as a tool. So I prefer the word Utility Knife to Tactical Knife... because I think the word Tactical is silly these days... Unless you're actually in a tactical unit with LEAs or The Military.

When I think of the word tactical, I think about police throwing flash bang grenades into a building before a forced entry,
or military scouts calling in a fire mission on some targets of opportunity.

Really, a knife doesn't come to mind.

BUT, a good solid knife, made of excellent S30V steel, has an extremely strong locking mechanism, with solid and visually pleasing handles,
a razor sharp edge and a quick silk-smooth opening and closing, as well as not being too extremely heavy would be the benchmade Rukus.

I keep it in my pocket every time I do a tactical entry into winn dixie, or have a tactical breakfast at IHOP, doing a tactical patrol of the neighborhood with my dog on a leash or out drinking a tactical beer.

second tactical knife up from the tactical bottom.

+1 for the Cold Steel Recon 1.

for around 65 bucks, you get a rock solid knife. They offer, if I remember correctly, three blade shapes-clip, tanto and spear, also serrated or not, your choice, extremely durable, solid and very full of grip G-10 handles, and the lock holds like 150 pounds or something like that. They will also send you a free DVD in which they torture test some of their knives so you can see how strong and sharp they are.

I have the Tanto Recon 1, and for the $65 dollar range its one of the best I've seen and handled.

I wished they made the spear point without serrations. I had one of the first clip points back in the day... good little knife. I think the Benchmade Griptillian is a little better for nearly the same price point though... I personally prefer 154cm to aus8a... I think it to be the superior steel between the two.

What is the best anything? These people pop up in here and ask the "What is BEST" question like there is one undisputed answer. First off look around. Your in here so you have internet access. Get some gun and or knife magazines and read some as to whats out there. Everyone in here is going to try and assist the OP but it's just opinions. Not one single "The Best" As well as no use description or criteria from the OP... Seriously!!!!

I’m not really sure that they think there is one definitive answer so much as they find it helpful to hear what people with more knowledge an experience think is “the best” and why. Its doubly good when there is some debate on the subject.

It’s a really good way to learn. That’s how I learned. That’s how I’m learning.

I understand what your saying as to the learning. I am making reference to the fact that the "The BEST 4inch Tactical Folder" is vague at best. How's about:
(I'm in the market for a large 4" heavy duty folder. I am kinda new to this so some OPINIONS would be helpful in regards to manufacturer and materials. It's gonna be used for blah-blah. And I have X amount of $$$$ to spend.)

my recent two folder I picked up are a Strider SMF and a Benchmade Dejavoo. I am really happy with both.

I think one should make a decision on price range, first and fore-most.
Hey, if your limit is 30 bucks, you don't have too many options.

Then I'd decide on style, handle material and blade steel.

Some have mentioned the benchmade griptillian, and I know that i have one in one of my posts, but I bought that one for my wife, because it was pink, and I wanted her to have a BM. Personally I don't care for that light plastic handle.

Same goes for the sog Trident folder. I thought that was the best knife in it's class until I got that Cold Steel Recon 1 for the same price.
Solid G-10 handles compared to a light, wobbly, zytel make a big difference in how sturdy the knife is. That is in the $65 range though.

into the couple hundred dollars class my vote is for benchmade Rukus, hands down. Yes I do have a BM Infidel for $400 that out the front knife fails to fire maybe 1/30 times, the rukus has never failed to open. It's easy to clean, reversible pocket clip, you can even change and customize the handle materials to your liking. Basically i give this knife a 10 out of 10, can't find any thing wrong with it.

I'd actually be interested to hear of any features from any other folder brand/type that out-do the Rukus. I'm vouching for this knife.
