tactical knives magazine

You see ads for knives in the Mag. that also happen to be in the articles because magazines have their articles ready well ahead of time, then they seek out the makers to buy ads for that issue.

Ex. a magazine is going to do a large feature on "rescue'' knives, they then let the knife co. know this. It only makes sense for the knife co. to put their rescue knife in an ad when there will be a story about rescue knives in that issue.

There is a "list" of sorts that magzines put out showing upcoming articles so companies can buy ads in issues that match their knives. Sometimes a competing magazine will see if they can get a similar article out a month ahead by using this "list".

I love TK. I also find Van Cook's articles quite informative. So he adds a little entertainment value. Nothing wrong with that. As far as them not being very critical of the knives they review, Steven Dick once said in an editorial that they won't publish a review if the knife turns out to be garbage. I think that's the way to go. Why waste space just so you can tell readers why they shouldn't buy a knife when you can feature knives that are worth your hard-earned money? I also like the fact that they feature, for the most part, knives that are made to be used and not just looked at.

For me, as a martial artist, gearhead/freak and freelance writer here in the Philippines, I like it for what it is---a magazine that serves as a mere reference point for those above points of interests, not gospel truth on anything knivfe-related though.

One of the few magazines that I buy readily without having to leaf through it. Van Cook's funny, Mike Janich is the most the technical and look to Shectman's and other's outdoors lessons and trips. Mroz tends to feature a lot of "in-use" in his trade (bodyguard). The late Butch Winter was also a leading source for me on steel types and their attributes.

My cons are its price. Here in the Philippines, its 55 pesos to $1! Do the math and weep! So I tend to buy them when they're at discount shops or booksales, which means they're out-of-date. The writing style seems to lack a more detailed or in depth character (again, Janich seems to be the exception).

When TK says they'll never print a bad review of a knife that's not true. Do you really think their reviewer gets paid for work that's not printed? They never do a bad review by design. That's why in some reviews 1095 is a great steel for tatical knives and in other reviews 420. All reviews are positive because there is no journalistic integrity.

Tried them all for a period of time and ended up keeping only Blade. Even it's geting a bit heavy with ads.
