Tactical Knives, the magazine

I read Tactical Knives for many years. My one big beef with the reviews is that there were barely any negative comments. They never met a knife they didn't like. I also thought the Jerry Van Cooke articles were more useful than the comma cut articles.

On the topic of print media; my books will still work 30 years from now. Their batteries won't have stopped being made. Their formats no longer recognized. Their screens won't have cracked. They will still work when the power is out for days. The don't have Digital Restrictions Management attached to them. It will be a sad day when we lose books and print media. Cherish that pulped wood while you can!

First, print media isn't going away, they're just not on paper. So what? I know you old timers hate it but the 21st century is here to stay. :D

Really? The other twenty weren't :D

...... And all that assumes that the emp was attached to warheads that have wiped out all libraries that currently exist. I think we'll be okay. :D

I doubt all the libraries will be destroyed in any explosions. It's more likely the decline in the use of actual printed books will cause some to close, some I used to go to already have, and others to switch to digital data banks with monitors on the tables we used to sit at to read books. As much as things have already changed in the last forty years, it hard to not expect at least double that amount of change in the next forty....

I agree. I'll probably be breaking out the old Foxfire Edition and refreshing my memory on setting up a still. Note to self, pick up some copper tubing :)

Get a good yeast culture started now, and you'll never have to be sober again :p

It is indeed the same 'Gunny' He's a small time actor named Lee Emery. His appearance in the movie Full Metal Jacket seems to be his main claim to fame.

Very interesting! I had no idea, figured he was some old Ret. Army guy they'd got to endorse some of their stuff as hard use field tested stuff... nothing against SOG of course, I own a few and they used to be one of my favorites. Interesting.

He also served in the Marine Corps for 10 years if I recall correctly.

About two years back the power grid in my part of the town went out for about 7 hours and I had forgotten how nice it was to not hear or use any TV computers, lights etc for an evening. We lit a few candles and I read a book by candle light for a bit and then my wife and I went to bed early. Ah! Peace & quiet!

No the world didn't end and the sun even rose the next day.

Hope not, I just mailed my renewal this morning????????????

I just got my renewal notice in the mail Friday, why would they send those out if they knew they were shutting down???

I hear you. This makes sense then, I was wondering why I had not received the notice to renew. That is a shame IMO. I sub to Blade and I skipped KI this year...though I picked up the last two issues at our Kroger. Guess I'll reup with KI so I'll have two magazines to look forward to. I was getting a tad dissapointed with TK and their reviews etc. Blade and KI are my favorites anyhow. RIP TK it's been real.

Maybe so, but there was something to be said for the old rotary phones. Much like magazines vs the net, rotary phones didn't stop working just because a the big fuse (transformer) in your neighborhood blew, or a storm took out a cellular tower. Some us us still enjoy reading in peace out away from things and not soaking up emp in the process. There just may come a day when people actually regret all of the magazines and brick and mortar stores being gone.

I totally agree with that last sentence. Give me the smell of newsprint and the feel in my hands any day over the net. But I think I am in the minority there.

I know several of the writers for TK, and know several makers that sent their knives in for articles, and got well used knives back. I didn't like it after it shifted from about 60 Tactical 40 bushcraft to 80 tactical 20 bushcraft, if that. I still got a copy here and there and will pick one up if I can find it. My local Walmart carried it, I bought it there.

Knife World and Backwoodsman are the only knife related magazines I read these days.

I'm embarrassed to say I have never heard of nor seen Knifeworld until this thread. I take it's pretty good? Is it slanted to any particular area of knives? Thanks.

Not to go too off the topic. But I always enjoyed your stories with pics. Did you stop doing that or is it in the part of the forum I haven't been to? TIA :-)

Nope, didn't stop. Just moved north, and this past winter was hard enough just to keep with all the chores at the new place and work so I slowed down for a while. Here is the last picture thread I posted from this past winter. There will be more now that the three feet of snow and deeper drifts have melted away :).

Sorry to see TK being discontinued. I've read it since 1995 when it first came out. Quite a few of the writers I can call friends, I've even shared a campfire or two with them. Dan Shechtman is a very good friend of mine and a top notch writer. I personally know many of the editors and staff at Harris I consider good friends also. Steve Dick IMO, is the best writer in the business. I wish them the best with future projects.

Unfortunately I think all magazines will be going away.

I don't agree. There is something nice about holding a magazine rather than an ipad or cellphone. Those who love their mags, will keep buying them, keeping them in business. Ya gotta support the things you like or they WILL go away. Not enough people thought buying TK was worth it, too bad.

Sorry to hear TK is finished. It was a great run and like most great things they eventually come to an end.
I agree with most of what was said here, advertising, slanted opinions, but as was stated earlier in the thread what
Magazine operates any differently. Street Smarts was my favorite article as well as the occasional articles on edc items.

Thank you Steven Dick for your honesty and integrity. Finally, I dont quiet understand the negative speak against Lee Emery.
11 years in the Marine Corp, Staff Sergeant, 14 months in Vietnam. That's enough for me.

Peace

Emery found a way to turn being a Viet Nam vet into a career plus that very few other vets did. I salute him for that.

Bummer..........I've been a subscriber for years and will miss it.
It's was always nice to come home and see that in the mailbox.
I like the physical act of sitting down in my favorite chair w/ a fresh cuppa joe and reading through the magazine.

Those bashing the Gunny .......trolls.

It runs more to the traditional side of things, very solid writing staff. It's more of a newsletter than magazine, so keep that in mind.

You can see lists of the feature articles here to see if it's something you might like -

Also, they'll send you a few trial issues for free -

I'm hoping we will see more knife articles in New Pioneer, American Frontiersman and other Harris publications.

Mistwalker, you picked a helluva year to move north! I am really sorry to hear about this, for you & for those of us that really like TK. Nice photos, by the way!
