I've been looking for a tactical pen. Some of them I have came across are Benchmark, Timberline, MIL-Tec, and Hinderer. Does anybody have a preferance? Which would you choose?

I've got the Timberline and one aluminum/ one titanium Hinderer Pen. The ti Hinderer is heavy/very well made and if you get the kit, has many configurations. The aluminum Hinderer is markedly lighter/very well made. Both can come in shorter sizes that fit better in shirt pockets. The Timberline doesn't look as "interesting" or maybe it looks more like a normal pen and is made out of aluminum. The cap is held on the pen with friction from an o-ring, which also makes it watertight. For whatever that's worth to you. If you are in an overt type job, LEO/MIL, a Hinderer wouldn't look out of place. But the Timberline would look more normal in civilian kit. And it will get no attention in a Airport security line, the Hinderer is in best checked baggage or change the configuration so it looks more innocent. My two cents.

I'm in need also. The Hinderer I saw at blade was modular and very nice, but I also would like to hear what others think. I just want a plain Black one.

Got Pen?

need some info if you do, any pics or links would be nice as well:thumbup:

I have a Benchmade, and love it! As noted by BoBo your selection should be headed by your job ie.. Leo etc. and by where you will be carrying it. Some Security people will not allow the more aggressive ones in certain areas, airports, courthouses, Fed. facilaties etc.

Just out of curiosity...what's the difference between a pen and a "tactical" pen?

And what's an agressive pen....my Mont Blanc looks pretty aggressive :D

I've got a pen. Don't know if it's tactical?

Anyway it looks nice:

A "tactical pen" is one designed for use as a self defense tool. All that I have seen were made out of metal. By "aggressive" I mean pointed on they ends, and fluted on the sides( for tissue grabs) and also they just look mean.
Any pen can be used as a self defense tool, these are designed to last longer than one or two strikes.

Ok, gotcha :D kinda like a kubaton of sorts. I dunno, I'd be afraid of killing someone if I jabbed em in the head with a kubaton. People usually lose interest after you knock out some teeth or mangle their face in some way. Or put them into a wall if one's available :p. At least it's been enough soo far knock on wood.

I have the Hinderer Kubotan Pen set and it's nice, but today I am picking up a Benchmade pen. The Hinderer doesn't see much use as I don't like having to unscrew the cap to use the pen. The Benchmade is nice as you can snap the pen cap on when using (The Hinderer can be screwed on the back with the right piece on there) so this is more appealing to me. As for the Timberline, they aren't bad, but the cap won't stay on when in use (on the pen that is).

If you travel a lot by flying, my boss (new) has been through 5 different major airports without any problems carrying his Benchmade. I've taken the Hinderer through to New York from Anchorage in my back pack with no problems. YMMV :)

I just ordered a Hinderer. I was curious about the unscrewing aspect so I might also get a Benchmade or a Timberline. I have read that the Timberline has issues with the cap being loose when writing so I may go with the Benchmade. The key was that I am going to Brazil for a couple weeks and I wanted something I could take with me for edc.

My wife and I both have the Benchmade, and it's pretty cool. If anyone asks about the pointed end, (which does look pretty aggressive), we're going to say that it's so we can use it as a stylus for our PDAs. Hasn't come up yet, but I'm paranoid about it.

If you are going to get the Benchmade, you might want to wait until mid July....word on the street is that they'll be releasing a stainless steel version then...I figure it's got to be more durable than the aluminum ones available now.

I saw the SS one at Blade.Nice but it is 80.00 higher than the Alum one and very heavy. The Surefire that is coming out is IMO a little nicer than the BM and will take many different refills.

surefire has a what i would call a tactical pen coming out

it's aluminum w/ a glass breaker built in

Just looked it up and I want one!

Not really tactical like the others, but I love the glass breaker, looks, and can use most any cartridge. And it's a Surefire, so you know it's tough and would feel great in hand.

But at $125 thats as much as my L1 cost....hmmm, to many to choice from.

Something to consider is that it's a pen. Seriously, people tend to overlook that, and I'll give the above mentioned Stainless Steel pen as illustration. That would be great for taking out vampires, but a bit difficult for real world work.

I own two Titanium pens, a Hinderer and an Anderson. I prefer the Anderson for day to day work because it is less "aggressive looking". The Hinderer is pure badass. I'd be hesitant to try getting it through airport security in a carry-on: I might get it through 9/10 of the time, but the time someone says it's a kuboton and won't let me argue is the time I'm out some $200 in kit. Not worth it. Just my 2 cents.

I'd strongly advise an Aluminum pen. They're built strong enough that you aren't going to ever have a durability problem versus Ti or SS, but they'll give you much better performance for actual writing and riding in your pocket or kit. I'll be keeping my Ti pens, mostly for their intrinsic value, but I plan on getting one of the new Benchmades or Timberlines for actual day to day use. That's been my experience.

Oh yeah, and that WH above is absolutely beautiful. Ain't no airport uniform gonna take it away from you either: hiding in plain sight is sometimes the best option. Something to think about.

I think I'll save my money for the SS Benchmade. I have a few Benchmade knifes and I'm pleased with them. Of course they are not Busses, but they will do in a pinch. If anyone has a pic or a link for the SS Benchmade, please post it.
