Tactical Pen

That pen is to nice to be used as a weapon. The blood and guts would ruin the look.

I wasn't really planning on defending myself with this pen:D. Just that the word "pen" in the title seemed like a good excuse to post the pics...:o

Kind regards,

Jos

thanks JWBirch those were my thoughts about airport security so I will probably be picking up a Benchmade soon. The WH is fantastic

"Tactical" pens are a great idea, and I like them, but I think it's only a matter of time until anti-self defense types wise up to them. The Benchmade model in particular really does look like a weapon. I'd like to see a model made that wasn't quite so aggressive looking. I guarantee the Benchmade pens won't make it through airport security for long. They are too easy a target for politicians.

I would be interesting to see the wording of legislation intended to specifically ban these kinds of pens, though. They'll have to ban anything hard and/or sharp and/or pointy.

Pretty soon everyone will be walking the streets wearing Nerf suits. Buildings will have to be made from foam, because bricks are potentially lethal weapons.

Hell yea, you ever see one of those curtain walls or god forbid a solid brick wall go out from a fire!?!? GET BACK, because those things bounce out at you. Bone breakers!

I agree about the benchmade looking too weapon-like. Otherwise I would have purchased one. I have a Mil-Tec since they first came out and like it quite a bit. It is always clipped to my jacket pocket. I like the fact that it does not scream TACTICAL  As a matter of fact I went through airport security with it no problem. The only gripe I have with it is that it does not have a O ring and sometimes unscrews itself loose. I had it happened once and the ink leaked and soaked into the fabric of my jacket

On the lapolice website they preview a Sure Fire pen thats coming out. That one doesnt look tactical at all, except it has a glass breaker on the back. Might want to look into that one!

I have the hinderer ti pen, I like it, but not as a carry on me pen, I now keep it in a custom planner I just got for my birth day, and it is nice in there because it is easier to carry, that pen is effing heavy!! Also the ridges in the Hinderer just above the threads for the cap are pretty uncomfortable to hold onto IMO, I also just got the mil-tac TDP-1 and freaking love it!! it is nice and light but feels sturdy, and it writes like a dream, was about 1/3 price of the hinderer, and is much more toned down looking, and the way the cap secures the back of the pen while you're writing is alot better/easier to use than the Hinderer, I personally will not buy the Benchmade just beacause it screams WEAPON!!!!!!! and is going to kill the covert self defense tool/pen idea IMO.
as for the Timberline, I've avoided those as I've heard and seen that the cap will not stay on the pen.
and I really want the SF pen,
and I am sooooo effing jealous of the William Henry pen owner, those are teh most amazing looking writing instrument I have ever beheld!!! .........maybe someday........

bottom line, for everyday/in a pocket use, I'd go fot the Mil-Tac, if it's gonna be in a planner or briefcase or something like that, go with the hinderer, if cost is an issue get an aluminum Hinderer or the Mil-tac, they are about the same price

you guys.
just get a rotring 600 or newton:

you can get either a ballpoint, rollerball or fountain pen, and if you get a fountain pen with a steel nib you won't even need to carry a knife or striker for your firesteel. they're made out of solid brass that's been coated, so they weigh about as much as a half-track, and even picking one up now that they've been discontinued won't cost as much as one of those fruity tactical pens. plus the ones with the lava finish are really sexy:

I take issue with this whole "tactical pen" thread. Why? Because now I really want one. But the trouble is that I am always loosing my pens. I'm so bad that I stopped getting nice pens and opted for the cheap bic pens than come in a big box.

(sigh) Time to go look into all mentioned here. ;)

LadyThud has the exact same problem, with the same solution. She hasn't lost her benchmade yet though! *knock on wood* Going on two months, with daily use. :)

Glad you brought these up, very nice pens at very nice prices. They write very well too.

And Tyrkon, I've lost two of these, so I'm out a total of $65. Here's to hoping my wife never loses her Grayson Tighe Odin's Eye!!!

If you guy's haven't seen what Bryan Tighe's son is doing, please check out Grayson Tighe's stuff. It's up there with the WH for sure.

Damn! You had to go and post that hadn't you? Now I want one.;)

Kind regards,

Jos

What does one do with a tactical pen anyway? Self-defense writing?;)

The pointy end of the Benchmade pen can be used as a stylus for a Palm Pilot; makes a good, legitimate reason for it.

My favorite are those clear BICs. If I remember correctly you can use them to shoot peas and spitballs.

Those are very nice. I think I have to go and by one now.

Sorry, but I lost track of this thread, and posted this in Gadgets:

I have no martial arts expertise at all, but back in the days after 9/11, those of us flying started thinking seriously about what we would do in a terrorist, last ditch situation. My five foot nothing sister-in law, e.g., who flies a lot, pointed out that seat cushions make a good shield because of the straps underneath (for when they would be used as a flotation device). Some of us have not forgotten, and still think in terms of some form of do-or-die preparedness.

One suggestion, of course, is a pen, the first thing I thought of because I always carry several. My solution was this: many European museums sell a cheap pen that has an all metal body. The Prado in Madrid sells this, and I carry one I bought from, and is labeled, appropriately enough, the Imperial War Museum in London. I just checked, and even when I had the refill out, I could not bend it despite putting a lot of stress on it. This metal would clearly be sturdy enough to penetrate soft issue (e.g. eye or ear). Other benefits: I forget what comes with it, but I switch to a readily available Parker Gel refill, which works very well, as a result, I have a great writing pen that has other uses in an emergency. Also, they are still relatively cheap, even with the weak dollar. Last year the one in London was running about six pounds.

Has anyone else ever considered these for defense?

Also, to be honest, that Surefire looks tempting.

Took some pics of our pens right after I posted on this the first time, and just plum forgot to post them. Better late than never right? These were taken in a hurry, forgive the blurriness.

These are the Benchmade tactical self defense pens. Would have been nice if they just called them pens, but whatever.

This keeps the pointy end from poking you if you have small pockets, and while it looks wierd...it is less threatening than the extra pointy stylus.

When the pens are set up to use they look pretty innocent. I don't really intend to fly at this point, but if I was going to, I'd have this sucker out just like this and be doing some mad libs with it when I go through security.

It snaps on with a snap ring, same way it attaches to the front.
