gutentag, everybody. anyone upgraded from the wood/leather sheath that comes from HI? suggestions? picts?

shanks.

I've done a few, but Bri in Chi could tell you more. He is the venerable master of the craft. I recently got a Dan Koster WSK, and his kydex scabbard for it has convinced me that on large knives kydex is the way to go. Its light, safe, and secure. I think Leather is not so good on these big knives. It takes a lot of leather to do one too!!!! I liked carving one out of wood, and loved the results too, but boy was that a hell of a lotta work. Anyway here is more pics than you probably cared to see anyway. ;) :D

Jeez forgot to say...

WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks bro. I don't know if they're tactical, but IMHO they're a little more functional than before.

No heavier than the standard wooden scabbard by feel, but no better either. I really don't like doing them in leather. My new standard scabbard upgrade involves removing the rings for the accessory knives and making a new frog for the resulting thinner scabbard. I like my belt loop on my frog to be long so that the end of the handle is right about belt level too. Thinning the scabbard aids in having it hang vertically. The results are shown in the fourth picture down. Both of those rigs carry like they aren't even there.

Here's one by my favourite sheath maker, Vadim Grynko (www.vessleatherworks.com).

I love that man's work. I look, and I am humbled. Great handle too Dan. Is that the one you had with you at Blade Show?

+1 what Andy said..

Wow that makes me wanna go in another direction with my quickdraw idea...I finally got my first one done and I doubt that I will make another like it...Working on getting it sent to Steve for is opinion before I post it (I played with the colors ;) )

Again that is some stunning work by BOTH Dan and Vess...

thanks guys....exactly the sort of responses i was hoping for. i dont really dig the leather either, but those quick-draws look pretty sweet. the kydex at the end too. gracias.

Here's a few more. I hope they're big enough too see.

Edit:
Well I did think they were larger than that. I'll see if I can find some larger ones.
I forgot for a moment I had these uploaded on a photo host...
Here are some larger pix, just click on the individual pic you want to look at and it should enlarge them.

Andy,
Thanks for the kind words:D
Your new work is very impressive. You keep plugging along and out-doing yourself. It makes me smile to see such good work. If I can help, let me know.

Thanks Brian. Good to hear. Good to see you btw.

i like these sheaths and stuff.

perhaps this winter, i'll design some stuff...

in the meantime, i took my large GRS, took off the chape, and covered the entire original, but badly scuffed and dinged HI sheath with 1 inch wide ranger bands from bottom up - on the very bottom, i put a 4 inch band, with some overlap, which i then rolled up, and covered with bands, all of them shingled. it's tough. it also compressed the sheath some, and makes drawing much stiffer... which means the khukri *CAN NOT* fall out. hopefully, the tension doesn't crush the wood and shatter it. mmm.

my intention is to buy a couple sheaths from "that outfit whose name i can't remember" but they sell blackjack II sheaths by their lonesome. good stuff for $30.

The place is knifeware.com
I got their leather sheath for $32 + shipping. It works for 15" blades. I don't recall who first mentioned them on the site, but the sheath is worth it.

when you say 15" blades... is that over all length of the khukri... or the blade portion itself? mmm, if just the blade, it should work well enough for those 18" OAL knives, yes?

Beautiful scabbards, thank you

- I meant 15" overall length. I haven't tried a khukuri longer than 16" in the knifeware sheath. Other forumites can pitch in here.
