Uncle Bill,

Allow me run an idea by you. I would like to purchase a 12" Sirupati sans handle, bolster and buttcap. My father- in-law is a very gifted knifesmith. I would like to give him one of the completed blades and have him apply a baked on teflon/moly finish and some grooved linen micarta handles and maybe a good guard. A leather or kydex sheith would complete the project.

What do you think? Are you able to get the blades without the handles?

By the way, he is VERY picky with his knives and usually doesn't pay much attention to production knives or other makers. He was extremely impressed with my AK and is talking about buying one for himself. Trust me, this is very high praise indeed!

Hi Mike:

First, thanks for the very kind words. My best customers are those who understand and appreciate fine workmanship.

About the bare blade -- it is easier and much quicker to get a 12 inch Sirupati and remove the handle yourself and rehandle it as you want. You'll have the scabbard, frog, karda and chakma this way, too. If you are interested in this approach let me know. If not, let me know that, too, and I'll see what we can do but be prepared for a wait.

And thanks again for passing on your father-in-law's reactions to your AK.

I don't know if I could bring myself to dismantle an exiting handle. The horn handle on my AK is so beautiful there is no way I could alter it. Well, I'm going to have to wait for a while anyway. I've got some upcoming expenses that are going to leave me a bit drained. Of course there's always overtime.....
Maybe by the time I am ready (financially that is. If I could I'd drain the rest of your existing stock!) the second shop will be up and running and you'll have a few seconds lying around.
I don't know if you saw it on the general forum or not but there is a man who is looking for custom knifemakers to advertise on his web site. I'm going to try to get my father-in-law to link up with him. His name is Dave Beck. I'll let you know if he posts any of his work. I think you will be impressed.
