hey everybody..
simple question here..

can i make a tactical hard use wakizashi and not provide a saya for it before selling it? or would it be better to sell it as a blade and let someone else mount it?

i have a hira zukuri blade with habaki and hamon in 1095. a real fast cutter. i was planning on putting a martial arts polish on it and selling it. but i didnt know if i should mount it or not. however if i were to mount it, i wouldnt include a saya. what should i do?

comments? condemnation? intrest?

Do you have any pictures? If the intent is to sell it then you have two choices. A) Let the buyer decide if there is one already. B) You decide and find a buyer later.
Personally, I am always up for different ideas that makers have and am interested in seeing them take shape. However, others may be strictly interested in keeping the characteristics of the finished work more traditional.

thats a good thought..

maybe should put it up for sale first..

i say mount it with a hard use handle and be done with it.....if it was meant for hard use and i bought it i would get a sheath on my own for it anyway.....ryan

So...
make a hard use synthetic handle, and the the buyer come up with a sheath?
thanks for the help.. but here is a another question...

how large of a tsuba shoud i put on it.. if it is for cutting or hard used.. i would think a smallish tsuba. what do you think?
thanks
~Chris

hey shadetree!
i didnt get any PMs.. however.. someone one already spoke for it.
but if you are intrested in a blade.. that can be arranged too! *Grins*

yeah.. i shoudl mantion that the blade (with a user handle and resin soaked wrap is pretty much spoken for)
sorry!
but if you are intrested in a blade, email me at Knifemaker87@gmail.com
thanks so much!

Hi Chris, I think that it needs a scabbard - something in kydex should be fine for a tactical job. Cheap and easy to make as well. I would make the tsuba match up with the rest of the fittings, imo the size is only important relative to what it's matched with.

I can certianly make a sheath for it, but i guess what i was hoping to avoid was having to make a full out saya for a hard use blade. you see? and i am gonna do the handle in tan canvas micarta and black linin micarta. for a bulbinga and ebony look. I will prolly include something to protect the blade..
thanks so much

I know makers that do all of the above. It depends upon what the buyer wants to do or have done. Many collectors want a fully finished piece though so you can not go wrong finishing it out.
