'Tactical' Watches

I am a big watch nut, and have been on watch forums for years. I bought a Traser P6500 from eBay seller World*of*watches for a nice price. Very good service from them.

There is no doubt that this is the brightest lume around. It is amazing how bright it is, and it only dims after 10+ years of use.

Yes, the Luminox and Traser watches are made in the same factory. Luminox is primarily marketed in the USA, while Traser is primarily marketed in Europe.

The P6500 has a composite case, but other models are to be had in steel and titanium. Highly recommended.

Jeremy

I'm looking to upgarde from my G-Shock and have been looking at the 'new' breed of tritium lit watches, but am a bit confused. Two brands seem to advertise a lot, Luminox and Tracer (H3). Both trade heavily on the SF/Navy Seals name. Which is better?

Ideally I'd like somthing like a Seiko divers watch (good metal body, saphire glass, rubber strap, not to busy a face and day/date) but with tritium illumination.

Am I asking too much? Any advice or alternatives from any watch freaks much appreciated. Thanks in advance...

Maybe you are asking a "little" much (concerning tritium vialed watches vs a Casio ;) The Casio G-Shock can take "intentional" abuse...I've got several of the other everyday watch brands mentioned and I wouldn't intentionally put them through what I would with a Casio (just because I can philosophy).

That being said, I still like my tritium vialed watches alot (two Luminoxes and one Marathon Navigator)...I REALLY dig being able to put the watch up and being able to see the time easily and immediately one-handed. I've beaten these watches up rather well (had each between two to four years) and they've held up respectably (the Marathon has a domed crystal, so I am a little more careful with it).

Quite frankly, some of the paints/coatings put on SOME watch hands/markers will last remarkably well (six to eight hours illuminance without having to "squint" to see what time it is showing...good enough to take the place of tritium vials for my taste). The only one that I have that does this well is an Omega X-33...I'm sure there are many others, but that is the only one that I'm personally familiar with. A Seiko diver that gives off this length of luminescence would be a great watch if there is such a thing?

Concerning a tritium watch washing out/extremely noticeable to night vision goggles--one would think so...but that is not correct. Wrong colors and wavelength...in english, the reds/ambers are the ones that show up like a beacon under goggles (all the kids with red lense flashlights in the field--very low light output in the visible spectrum--show up like a flashing stop light under NVGs...has to do with IR spectrum...yada, yada, yada). FYI, my Marathon Navigator has one red vial at the 1200 position...too small an output--not noticeable under NVGs (ANVS-6, Type 6s in my case).

Personally I'd love an analog/digital combo like my old casio AMW-320 (gold face) with tritium, but I haven't found it...cest la vie.

many thanks for such a well informed opinion. Been using a Seiko divers watch for a week or two now and the illumination is fine for me. One handed time telling! Good for roped access :D

Just put this monster to my watch collection, its huge but suprisingly light.

Man that is one chunky looking piece of kit. Makes my Seiko look like it's wearing a blouse. I feel humbled and effeminated at the same time.
