Can I ask how the Spyderco Civilian is somehow socially acceptable compared to all of these monstrosities?

Knives totally suck for defensive purposes,

seriously? they sell knives like post 36 on ebay cheap...
No, they don't.
That is actually a Falcata, an ancient weapon used on the Iberian peninsula, similar to the greek kopis.
Apart from the weird painting on the blade and the weirdo handling it the blade itself is a very serious battle proven design.

But he said it comes with a card that says "NO" to utility...
Futility is something it has in spades. It's decidedly un-pokey, has no hilt or choil... OK, so it's "slasher only"?
As far as passing the test of time... Has one ever been used successfully? I mean, lived up to it's one intended purpose?
I'm embarrassed for Spyderco.
Knives totally suck for defensive purposes, but this one seems even worse than most.
Let the lambasting of me begin...
Can someone seriously tell me how that Civilian has any "utility" purpose at all? It's just as ugly as the rest of the knives on this thread, borders on "mall ninja" if it has to come with a card telling you it's self-defense only, and did I mention how ugly it is?
I refuse to give Spyderco a pass just because they're Spyderco. And I don't understand people who insist it's okay because a company with a rock solid reputation made it rather than someone like Mantis who have a rep for overly "tacticool" designs.
In the 1990s Spyderco was approached by a specialized branch of U.S. law enforcement about making a knife for their undercover agents. These plain-clothes LEOs found themselves in situations where they often could not carry a firearm but carrying a knife was not a problem. Most had no formal training in self-defense tactics or MBC but as a last resort could use a blade to protect or extricate themselves from a life-threatening situation. This was how the Civilian model came to be.

edit: its not exactly called tactical, but by the looks of it, I believe its supposed to be "tactical"...honestly, I call it a joke
I hate to admit it, but I kinda like that in a really cheesy, has absolutely no reason to exist sort of way.
The only thing that would make it any cooler would be if the blade would retract and allow you to trigger that sucker to fly out of your jacket's sleeve!
