TAD Life Capsule - any use for it? Help me decide...

Hey folks - I have seen these Life Capsules from TAD and have often wondered if they would be helpful or just another expensive toy.

I LOVE the idea - nice and compact, looks like nice fit and finish and I am sure it is buuild like a tank - but how large is it - really? I mean can you fit much in it or is it just going to be a weight around my neck.

Also, do you think they would let you on a commercial flight with this in your pocket? Maybe if you show them the compass and some pills in side? I also could see this being a nice "fist filler" if needed or even swung like a whip - weighted end being the capsule itself.

IF you carry one of these or have seen them used well, please give me your feedback and input.

Thanks-
David

A four inch by 3/4 inch tube is pretty big to carry around your neck all the time. If you're looking for a survival kit, I'd suggest something like this instead. If you're looking for self-defense, I'd say that you're better off with a pepper spray than trying to pull this doohickey off over your head and punch someone with it.

Also, $32.95 is way too expensive, if you ask me.

A 2-AA cell Maglight flashlight is great punch weight and impact weapon that will pass airport and courthouse security with no problem especially if it's attached to your key ring. With keys attached, it can be a flailing weapon too.

Sometimes, security may want to turn it on quickly just to make sure it's a flashlight, but that's all.

Purchased the original model they released. Instead of a survival kit I use it as a pill carrier so I always know I have some of my medication at all times. It has also bee with me full time this last year that I've traveled 100% of the time. Never been a problem or even a minor issue anywhere in the world I've been. When its metal detector time I just put it with my watch and no one has ever even looked twice.

My only complaint is the secondary comparment for a compass. I have no need for one so that little section is never used.

That's good to know. Thanks for the info.

Have you passed a 2-AA Mag through airport and courthouse security yourself?

I nearly always carry one myself, so that's applicable in my situation.

Those thing are neat allright and I'm tempted to get one but I think it would be just another goodie. A while back I 'borrowed' someones idea , dont recall who on here , and made my own. I took an old AA mini Mag I had (I have several) and sawed the bulb part off , made sure it was clean and straight and epoxied at cap on the end , it's waterproof and lightwieght and quite sturdy. So for an hour or so of time and about 12 bucks I made my own 'survival tube' :D

I carry my keys on one all the time. It's been through many airports all over the world and into courthouses and other government buildings. The only place I've been required to leave it was inside the county jail and they don't allow keys, so that was the problem.

There is a good product called a spy capsule. I think that it is from "Buffulo Products" $4-5 range. Check out the "makerofboxes" site for a great screwtop pill box. I have carried the pill box and a capsule and never had airline trouble. I also carry a Inova X5 and a CMG ultra, no prob there either. Rebeltf... what did you use for a cap on your mini mag?

Dunno about a 2aa mag, but my surefire G2 got through security fine. I went through the full TSA inspection and the girl even played with it.

When I was flying back I noticed they had one handy for the TSA to use while inspect bags. heh.

The G2 is made of Nitrolon, I believe. My E2e and E1e are aircraft aluminum. They feel solid and reassuringly hefty in my hand. How does the G2 feel? Is there any way to attach it to a keyring?

Phil Elmore's website states that key flailing is not particularly effective.

Damn near anyone who's tried it can say that--unfortunately you have people like Kubota himself continuing to foist this nonsense on an unsuspecting public. Unless you have a minimum of a pound of keys and a long enough piece of material to swing them from (a police keystrap comes to mind), forget it. HIT with the bloody light and be done with it. One other tweak is to get an LED module and dump the incandescent lamp--they're known to fail under impact shock.

A tip for any MM users who attach keys to it: keep the tailcap tightened. I gave my mother a MM for use as a keychain and she came to me the other day complaining it didn't work. On inspection the cap was halfway unscrewed and the tube had been sufficiently dented to prevent it ever working again.

Well, who am I to argue with Phil Elmore?

I don't think it would be devastating. I don't think I said that. In fact, I suspect that the keys will break off in one or two hits. But, even one or two hits, especially if directed toward the eyes, could be helpful.

I also didn't say it was necessary to use such an impliment that way or that that was the only way it could be used. I only suggested it as one option.

Here's a thread from a little while ago that talks about the Mag Lite tube trick, has a few pics of the TAD Gear capsule in use and also an alternative from Cabelas. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=335225

I did end up getting (the last one I think) a TAD Gear capsule. They are supposed to have their next generation version out this year. I also bought the Cabelas match case w/compass that mentioned in the thread above. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chace to experiment with them yet.

I bought a used TAD capsule. For what it is, it's overpriced even used. It does fit a home rolled "cigarette" perfectly though ;)
