Tai Pan

In the interest of fairness I have to add another datapoint to the sheath issue. I bought a San Mai Recon Tanto from the CS holiday sale site, and I can report that the sheath doesn't dull the blade at all as long as you take a little care. Maybe they have fixed it. I stand by my claim that the Tai Pan sheath dulls the knife just carrying it around, let alone taking it in and out. At least mine does.

BTW, the Recon Tanto came sharp, in fact as sharp as any new knife I've ever seen. Also the edge was perfect 17 degrees, both sides, from hilt to tip. I've never seen anything close to this before, if it was sharpened by hand it's a freak in a good way. Could it have been done by machine? I think the Recon Tanto is better than the SRK, but that's way off topic.

Got me again. Should have known better I guess. They fixed the sheaths on the newer stuff right? 2 out of 3 of mine are fine, right? The Tai Pan is just the notorious problem model, and I must have gotten an older one from before it was fixed, so...

SRK Compact came today. Figured if I wanted one now is the time, right? Nice little knife. Dull out of the box (shipped in the sheath inside the box unlike the Tai Pan.) Sharpened up easily though. Hair flinging sharp. In and out the Secure-ex a few times, no good. You can look at the edge and see in the light reflecting where the glass has torn it up. NO they have not "fixed" the sheath problem. Fucking Secure-ex. I give up. If I EVER get another CS that comes in this worthless shit I'll factor in an aftermarket sheath before I decide if I want it. A Tai Pan is not going to be easy to get one for. Doubt I'll ever want another anyway. Out of 4 CS fixed blades, 2 of them I can't carry.

My Tai Pan does the same thing. I have just decided that it's a fighting knife and sharp enough to do damage. However, I plan on making a new leather sheath for it the first of the year. My sheaths aren't pretty, but they are pretty solid. If I make one, I can make two. If I do get around to making one, I'll just double it and send one to you if you like. No charge. My work isn't worth much. But I know it won't dull your knife like the secure-ex:) I'll keep you posted if I get this off the ground. A lot of it depends on me finding time to get to the leather supply store in Louisville:P

That's a generous offer. I was thinking about doing the same thing. We have a Tandy here. Would probably be working on one by now but I'm nursing a cut thumb right now. (knife nuts, right?) Cut a tendon so doc says three months or so to get back the strength and range of motion I'm going to get. Had it "repaired" Tuesday. Can't do anything with it yet. Typing sucks and is slow. Using a Sharpmaker left-handed sucks too, btw. But I make it work. ;)

I haven't done any leather work yet so mine probably wouldn't be worth much either. We can learn together. Nice work to look at here in the "Sheaths and such" forum.

That is a seriously nice offer man. Very cool.

Heres a bit of coincidence posting in a Cold Steel forum: my left pinkie does not work correctly because I cut it with a Cold Steel Desperado almost 20 years ago. Friendly advice from someone with a gimpy finger...go easy on it. I had mine fixed, didn't listen and SNAP. Only got one shot at it they said because it shot all the way back up into my forearm.

I have been dabbling in leather work for about 15 years. I can do solid work, but I don't worry about making it pretty;) I hope to get by Tandy over the holiday. My mother in law lives in Louisville. Since my household has all had the virus (you don't want it. It sucks.), we don't mind visiting her a day or two at the holiday.

So here's my chore list for my visit:
Hit up Tandy for some supplies.
Stop by Spark's shop and maybe grab myself something from my wish list that I didn't get ;)

If we manage to get there, I'll keep you posted.
