Everyone,
I think that the old thread moved because it started to stray away from the issue at hand. So, I am going to something different. Would everyone please post the files that they have found to be of good value. I don't care if they are cheap and worked or were expensive and were worth it. I am going to be needing new alternatives until I get a disc together. Thanks,
Steven

Thanks for re-starting this thread.

It was moved because the topic was for a different forum. I couldn't send you an email or PM because you don't allow them.

Talking about files and which ones work is a Shop Talk topic.

I like Magic-cut, Williams, and Simmonds

That file you have with the curve.....maybe it is a special file for filing convex bevels :)

I prefer old files found at swap meets for less than $1.

But then, as far as I'm concerned, the quality of the file is less important than the quality of the hands using it.

I'll third the Magi-cut, and I like the largest I can find, at least 12". Also I have been following the Magi-cut with a 6" mill #2 Swiss, a recommendation I picked up from some of the 1911 pistol smiths on another forum.

Well, the bent file that I had is a magicut. I must say, it was love at first stroke with the first one I bought, but I guess I will have to look for old USA stock.

Stacy, I thought I had e-mail enabled. I just checked, and I see it.

Just an update. Jantz is sending me a brand new file. They don't even want the old one back. Thanks all for the suggestions.

A new file is a sharp file, and a sharp file sings. Really.
The difference is astonishing. I'd never used a new file until recently, and it blew my mind.
(I know you're a file nut, Tryppyr)

For a while there I was buying every file I saw, I have a bunch.

I think the Magi-Cut I have is the best and I have had good luck with all sorts of random files. I don't use many files now so I will stick to the magi-cuts when I need more.

Brand doesn't seem to matter very much, try some different ones until you find some you like. I had some Harbour Freight ones that were awesome, the next set was only ok. I have had good luck with the cheap sets sold at big box stores as well.

Grobet - they make good files, I have always had great luck with them

I respectfully disagree, at least in part. No amount of skill, certainly not my amount of skill, can make a dull or poorly-made file cut clean and true.

I've had the best luck with Nicholson, Simmonds and Tome'. Use 'em like they're sandpaper - disposable. Although actually, they're not. Some folks around here have mentioned file etching services that bring a worn file back to pretty decent shape. I'm saving up a pile worth sending in to check it out. :)
