Take it or leave it?

I've never had any problems travelling with knives, so long as they are in the checked luggage.

I always take a knife with me for obvious practical reasons, and also as a kind of talisman, it also becomes a reference point for memories - a particular knife that I travelled with will bring back memories of a particular trip.

I learned that taking one along can make you like it better. I, a man who rarely travels, had to go to Switzerland for a week on business earlier this year. Didn't know what to take. Decided on the 66 slim which I had relegated to small game hunting and backup status. Didn't mind if it got lost or stolen.

After a week of after hours traipsing over the Swiss hills and enjoying their fine meals and hospitality though the knife became a storehouse of fine memories. Now a man with limited world travels has a great knife to remind me of a wonderful foreign land.

Something to keep in mind.

I've got a little Case jigged bone damascus peanut that goes with me. It's been to the UK and seen the sights in York and London. It's been to Italy and seen Sicily, Reggio, Naples, Pompei, Rome, Venice, Florence and Padua. It's been to LA, San Franciso, it's seen the Redwoods. Ok you get the idea. It's travelled by plane, train and automobile. So far so good. I'd hate to lose it, but it seems like it would hate to be left home. Someday I hope I can hand it to one of my sons and tell them where it's been.

The downside of course is becoming attached to a "traveling knife" and then loosing it to the road.

When I travel by plane, the knife I have in my pocket goes into a zippered pocket in my shaving kit (along with whatever other knife I'm taking with me) and checked with my bag. I've done this for 20 years and never lost a knife in transit. My wife has also learned to tolerate the extra time needed at the baggage claim while I get my knife back in my pocket.

And while traveling, some of my knives have gotten beat up and one of my favorites ended up with some pitting on the blade after being drenched in the Brule River and then soaked by numerous thunder storms. It was a great kayak trip and I'd want a favorite knife in my pocket while traveling. My daughter is going to get a nice collection of some quality blades, but they'll carry the marks of pocket wear and I hope some great adventures.
