Can anyone tell me which US and European PM steels would be most similar to Takefu SG2?

Sg2 was designed as a cutlery steel from its inception not moved from another industry so it is unlikely that you will find any other steel that is close to it. you can get sg2 suminagashi sanmai at www.takefusteel.com

Yeah, that is kind of what my "research' has revealed. :D Bill, is any of that SG2 san mai in a plain cladding version or is the V-Toku 2 stuff the only steel that you have in that form?

right at the moment all I have SG2 in is the suminagashi san mai. I hope to make an ored of some different kinds soon.

Outstading. Do you forge those san mai steels to shape? I am dealt afraid of not being abel to keep the core straight. Also, you told me a while back that you TIG weld bolsters onto your kitchen blades, What steel would you use for doing that on the V-Toku san mai? the knives you made with that stuff that you have posted were amazing looking.

thank you JM. I use 416 for my bolster on both the san mai and suminagashi san mai blades. with proper preparation they can be silver solder on instead of tig welding.
