I'm going to be taking two blacksmithing classes this spring, both are one-day events. On the second day we will be making a knife. I'm happy with all my folders, there's always something handy to do the job. I don't want to make something that would replace that kind of knife. I have a large chopper that works just fine for that duty. I doubt I would make any kind of kitchen knife that would be better than what I have in my kitchen already so that's out. I don't need a knife for self defense.
I'm thinking about making a thrower. I have a few throwers, but they're not particularly tip-heavy. Maybe I'd make a Branson-type with more of a triangular point that then tapers back to the handle, and scale it with something that would hold up to the impact of getting thrown. Tough is better than hard for this application.
Right now I can't think of anything else I want.
Does that sound like a good project for a first knife? Even if I make something crude, it should be good enough for the job.

I would guess a thrower would be the ideal project, but the teacher will know better than any of us since he knows the equipment and is used to new students.

A paracord/epoxy handle would work well.
