I signed up to take a basic knife making class. Two 8 hour Saturday's. Not sure exactly what we will make , but everyone is expected to leave the class with a knife . No prerequisites other than being 18 or older, long pants, leather gloves, boots, eye protection , and long sleeve shirt. I just started collecting and I'm excited to gain an appreciation of just what our American bladesmiths labor through to create the masterpieces I've seen . Anybody have a clue what is typically made in a class like this? The syllabus was a bit vague but did imply we will be forging , hampering, belt sanding, and filing . Would you think just a basic carbon steel knife with a wood handle? I'm fine with something I can use as a kitchen or chef knife although I wouldn't mind a skinner or something more survival oriented.

Not sure man, I am sure they instructor will have some guidance. I think making a kitchen knife is a fantastic idea. You will probably use it way more often than a "Survival knife". Then you can have many hours to figure out what you liked about it, and what you did not and maybe take that into your next build.

Camping in the dark, foraging for food or whatever probably isn't the time you'll focus most on critiquing your work and coming up with great ways to improve it.
Best of luck.

Make something like a stout kitchen style knife.
If you make it stout, it will work serviceably in the kitchen AND in the woods. :)

Keep the design simple, and pay attention to handle design...too many people think a bunch about the blade and ignore the handle.
The handle is what will determine whether you'll enjoy using it or not, so make sure you think about it.

My best advice is start saving up money for that grinder! It'll probably throw you into an obsessive compulsive disorder to make as many sharp knives as possible.

I looked it up.. Not much info but it does have more sessions scheduled. Let us know how it goes.

Be sure to post a pick of your results. Sounds like a fun couple of Saturdays
