Taking a step back to see my accumulation.....

I've been saving some projects for winter to help pass the time in those long (actually short) cold winter days. I've been accumulating traditional knives at a fair pace while evaluating which ones I can work with. The keepers I have simply put back in thier boxes or sheaths and put on a shelf near my photography equipment. I'm coming to a cross roads of sorts with my accumulation, and needed to see everything I have so far to help decide what direction I want to follow. I know what I'd like to do, but budget concerns are an issue being on a fixed income (I've always hated that term - even when I was working my income was still "fixed"........).

So while I had everything out, and trying to come up with a good storage/display solution for this upcoming project, I took a quick snap. As I look at this pic, the first thing that pops out for me is the almost equal amount of fixed blade knives. I think this comes from my using mostly fixed blades in most of my years living in the woods here. Also the ongoing problem of finding folders that will work with my arthritic hands isn't an issue with them.

So now I will print this pic, and study it a bit. I want to find a direction to follow here as I am solidly hooked on this hobby and want more! This hobby has been great for me as I am mostly chair bound most days. But, I must slow down with my accumulation at this point. With most other things, I've been one to go for quality over quantity, so that will also play a part in my ongoing venture.

That one little bitty Toothpick in the middle throws off the symmetry of the collection. You better send that one to me for safe disposal. :)

It's a great looking group you've got there Stan!!

It sure does look lonely in there, doesn't it? I guess I'll either have to send it off to you or add some more.........

You have some nice folders, especially the toothpicks are worth some more views :)

.. But your traditional fixed blades are just plain awesome!! I really like each of these pieces.

Pretty impressive, Sir!

Thanks Andi - not trying to boast or anything but I quite impressed myself when I put them all out together - didn't realize all what I had!

And while I really like looking and the hunt of the great folders, I am always lured by these traditional fixed blade knives. Also a big plus is the great smell of leather with the sheaths.

Not exactly sure what it is yet - received it recently and haven't had time to do any research.

On the tang is "Premier" in a circle - likely a logo - on the other side it says "Sheffield England"

Interesting- I see almost no Sheffield knives except meat-carving sets. Great bunch of knives, I forgot to say.

That pic spoke volumes to me about the GEC and Queen fixed blades. It really is nice to see them laid out like that for comparison. You have really nice taste in knives Stan! Good luck to you in your search for a direction in your collecting, I have never really had any sort of " rudder in the water" myself as far as that goes...now I need to go looking at some GEC fixed blades;) $

The 2 GEC's and 1 Queen with it were my first fixed blade purchases and what got me started.

And I need a rudder of sorts - I find myself getting off on multiple tangents with my knife interests so this exercise today helped me focus a bit.

What jumps out at me is . . . . not one single multi-blade knife, and nothing medium to small. I realize this is in response to your needs, but there have to be some 3.5" 2-blades that have easy pulls. I'd look for something like that.

Good observation Jeff - and you are correct about seeing all fixed blades and single blade folders. I've shied away from any multi-blade folders mostly because of the pinch factor - being able to pinch open a lot of these that have enough blade showing when closed. Also I've sold off my smaller (3.5") folders as I have a hard time holding on to them and having any sort of dexterity using them.

Stan, I'm not sure where NW Penna is, but if you have anywhere close that sells Rough Riders, just go try a bunch.
They usually have nice pulls, about a 5, with lots of models in the 3½ - 3¾" range, and they're $10 - $15.
