well, I got my torx bits so I can clean my bump, but I can't get it apart!

I pulled off the clip, the 2 screws on each grip, the lock screw, and the pivot screw, i got one grip off ( the side without the lock) and the other side remains firmly in place. help?

Not that this question has any bearing on your particualar issue, but still, importantly, you're doing this disassembly with the knife open, right, to remove tension from the torsion bar?

the knife is not only open, the torsion bar is removed, so this is not an issue.

Wish I had an idea on how to proceed from there...unfortunately, I have no Bump to disassemble...is the pivot shaft just a really tight fit pressed into the lliners?

I was thinking that, but I'm sorta afraid to take a whack at it.

edit: NEW PROBLEM! some sort of shiny brass thing has fallen out and I don't know where it belongs! I do not see a matching one anywhere on the knife.

...STOP IT...YOU GUYS ARE KILLIN' ME! ! ! ! ...:p

OK, I believe that the brass dot fell out into the knife, and protrudes a little bit into the grip of the knife. after having some fun with tweezers, I placed it back where it "belongs" but it still looks somewhat loose.

and now it fell out.

THe brass thingy is a washer that goes around the pivot screw between the blade and handle scale. There should be one on each side of the blade, right?

it is this thingy.

I believe it lives inside a recess in the handle about 1/4 of the way down from the pivot end.

This is why the manufacturing companies don't want customers disassembling their knives.

Dude I wish ya alot of luck and hopefolly someone will be around to talk ya through it, if I had one I'd take it apart myself and take pics for ya, unfortunately I don't have one.

I gotta ask, what do you do for a livin'?

Yup that is in fact the Thingy. The Thingy comes in a variety of different shapes and sizes and metals. Many knives, except for the most basic designs, tend to have at least one Thingy. Over the years I have found that sometimes you can leave the Thingy out with no serious problems, and others the Thingy is indeed a critical component. I have a ton of Bumps but have never taken one apart and the presence of that Thingy and the fact that I don't know what it is means that I probably won't take one apart until I have plenty of time. Good luck with the tear down and your Thingy problem.

me? I'm a student. I work part time for a company that throws other companies parties (so BIG parties) I could blather on in more sophisticated techno-jargon that makes me appear more cultured than I truly am, but today I'm not in the mood, so words like doohickey and thinger are much more common than say grommet or stud or what-have-you

edit: blast! i figured if anyone would know it'd be spiral, the owner of virtually all production bumps, and some non production ones!

I am familiar with the doohickey as well. Very much like the thingy but completely different. As you can see I am not too good with the tear downs either. If you can wait I'll tear into one tomorrow and we will see if we can get through it.

Well I started to dig into one but was thwarted by loctite once again. The pivot screw was wicked tight and I didn't want to strip it. I'll give it another go tomorrow.

I do have a suggestion for getting to the other side. Start on one side and work through. The side of the knife, with the lock won't come off. Think of it as everything being build off of that scale verticaly. That side of the pivot should be shaped like this _l l_ so you will have to push it through the scale instead of taking the scale off this side. Hopefully that makes sense.

I still don't know what the whatchimacallit is but my guess would be that it is a tensioner for the Speedsafe and has something to do with the torsion bar acting as the detent. However, I am just talking out of my posterior at this point. I think this might be one for the mighty Tim.
