Taking apart a slipjoint

You can cut it apart with another knife ( old butcher knife ) and hammer.

It may ruin the scales depending on what they are made of.

I usually just look at garage sales and flea markets for old knives that are already broken.

Lightly file one side to remove any head or peening of the pins. Then use a screwdriver to pry the knife apart.
You can also use a drill press to lightly cut the burr from the pins. With a careful hand you can save all the pieces to reassemble.
