taking apart Gerber Yari

I don't know how many of you do this, but I like to smooth all the (non-cutting) edges on my knives, at least to the extent that they make it easier on the hand. I just got a Gerber Yari, which well finished, but has sharp edges on the tang under the handle.

I tried to take the handle scales off by removing the 4 screws that held them on, in order to do this smoothing. The problem is with the threaded inserts that engage the screw threads - they are VERY tight in the handle scales, effectively holding them on the knife without screws. It is as though the inserts are glued in place.

I think the inserts are just a press fit, and I can "drift" them out with a punch, but I wonder about getting them back in again without damaging the handle.

Has anyone done this? Any tips?

I did mine and also had a hard time the first time around. If I recall correctly I used a rubber mallet and gave it several hard taps that eventually loosened it enough for me to pull the handle slabs off. The inserts then were fairly easy to remove and put back.
